Yesterday I came across a cab driver parked in the bike lane right by the White House. I took some pictures, cuz that’s what you do, and then I filed a complaint with the DC Taxicab Commission using their handy-dandy online form.
This morning, I got a lovely form email.
I’m thinking that if taxi drivers (who make a large portion of the U-turns on PA Ave) keep having to sit down and have meetings with unhappy cyclists they’ve almost killed, we might actually see some changes.
The way I read that, you only get that far if they decide that a taxicab regulation was violated. Is there a taxicab regulation against u turns?

ParticipantThat’s true – I have no idea if there is a regulation. Perhaps if enough complaints are made they will make one? But it seems reasonable that there should be a regulation against violating traffic laws.

If taxicab regulations were violated the Commission will place your complaint in line for a meeting with the driver and appropriate violations and penalties will be imposed.
It seems like the meeting would be between the driver and the Commission because during said meeting I imagine they would impose the “appropriate violations and penalties.”
Hmmm, I wonder what would happen if they allowed cyclists to impose these penalties? Bicycle court, go!

It sounds like the driver will have a meeting with the Complaint. That will be interesting…

Your complaint will be reviewed to determine if any taxicab regulations and laws were violated.
If (regulations AND laws = violated)
{
null;
}If taxicab regulations were violated the Commission will place your complaint in line for a meeting with the driver and appropriate violations and penalties will be imposed.
If (regulations = violated)
{
meeting;
impose (appropriate violations, penalties);
}really says nothing about what happens if laws are violated but regulations are not.

I think it does…
Are you familiar with the NYC case of the taxi driver who severed a bystander’s leg while trying to run down a cyclist? Taxicab commission decided there was nothing prohibiting cabbies from doing that.
