Good morning. I am not a biker but a runner, however a friend recommended I join WABA because I am looking for an area cyclist who ran over my 4-year old son with her bike. Late afternoon Wednesday (Sept. 4, 2013) at Watkins Regional Park at approximately 7:40 my 4-year old son and I were jogging on the path next to other pedestrians. A fit, light-skinned black woman (possibly early to mid-30s) who was riding with a gentleman (perhaps mid-50s) with salt-and-pepper hair was speeding on the path, yelled “left”, and then proceeded to knock over my four year old who doesn’t yet know his right from left. Rather than getting off her bike when she saw my son panicking in front of her and not moving, she kept going and simply yelled “watch out.” She did not get off her bike until after she had knocked him down, ran over his right arm with her bike, and I pushed her from continuing to hit him again. Both bones in my son’s forearm are broken.

Unfortunately, too worried about my son at the time, I didn’t think to get the information of the biker before taking my son the the Emergency Room. The couple were preparing to leave together in a silver jeep, and did not offer their contact information. If anyone may be familiar with these bikers, would you kindly contact me.

    Thank you for your assistance.

That’s terrible what happened. I have some questions, though.

Have you contacted the police? I would recommend filing a police report of the incident if you haven’t done so already.
Did you get the contact information of any other witnesses? You said you were on the path next to other pedestrians who may have witnessed the event or seen the bikers.
Do you know anything more about the bikers in question (clothing they were wearing, type of bike used, clothing/bike color, brand, lights, stickers, reflectors, etc.)? There’s not much in the description to go on.
What do you mean when you “pushed her from continuing to hit him again” after she had knocked him down and run over his arm? I’m a bit confused about that because it sounds like you’re saying she tried to hit him again.

I hope that your son’s arm heals fully and quickly and that you can get all necessary information to resolve this case.

Have you reached out to any of the businesses around the area or the police to see if there is any available security footage around the time of the incident? With the amount of surveillance here you might be able to get a partial plate to identify the person in question.

I’m really sorry to hear about what happened to your son. I see lots of boneheaded idiots on bikes and on foot on the trails around here; there’s bad apples in every bunch. I’m sorry that your son fell victim to one of them. I hope his arm heals quickly.

Like bobco, I’d suggest you file a police report if you haven’t already. That was my first thought as well.

I also did not quite understand what you meant about keeping her from hitting him again. I’m imagining repeated attempts at assault and not a collision caused by a lack of caution and attention on the part of the cyclist, yet I have a feeling that you are describing something else. Any information you can provide about the cyclist or any eyewitness/contact info you have will be helpful to police. I’m sure there was a lot going on if your son’s arm was broken and you may not have been able to round up that info. Maybe someone else at the scene did?

Good luck getting things sorted out and thoughts with your son for a speedy recovery.

Wow, that’s terrible. Sorry to hear it.

In addition to the suggestions others have given, let me suggest that you put up posters in the park and nearby area to ask for help if you haven’t already.

Terrible indeed. I’m sorry to hear about your son’s senseless accident. I hope he recovers without any issues. Just like what bobco85 suggested…file a report with the local police and hopefully they can take quicker action. Perhaps witnesses might come forward or perhaps a surveillance video of the accident is available. Also it wouldn’t hurt to go back to the same area to just look around. Maybe that Jeep is a regular there. Good luck.
