Participantsome presta valves have removable/replaceable cores. since you probably don’t have a replacement removable core anyway, that’s likely a moot point. bottom line: just get a new tube.

ParticipantWell you’re not alone. I broke off a valve tip while trying to replace an inner tube this morning. The broken bit is rattling around inside my rim right now. I had to remove both tubes from another bike to use on this one, and after I destroyed one of those tubes, I also used the spare from my repair kit. After I rolled out, I realized the incident that resulted in two flat tires also damaged the rims worse than I thought.
I’m going to try to rebuild the front wheel tonight…

That sucks. Mine thankfully is on the front tire so it will be an easy replace although I’m going to go buy a new pump just to have at my house. (I lost my presta valve adapter that allowed me to use portable air compressor type machines). Figure I will need it again soon one day and that my handpump was the main culprit for breaking at the stem.

ParticipantI recommend a frame pump that works like a floor pump, such as Topeak Road Morph G. This hybrid type of pump makes it much easier to get up to high pressure and much more difficult to snap off the valve compared to traditional frame pumps. Of course, you should have a floor pump too, but if you have only one good pump, it should be one you can take with you. I have a floor pump, but I never use it because the gauge is broken. The Road Morph is a little bulky compared to normal frame pumps but works so much better. The gauge is not great but it’s OK. So my frame pump is the only pump I use.
I could not bear replacing the dented rim. I tried to tweet it this morning with a crescent wrench. The first time I used the front brake, I knew it was not good, but I rode on. So this evening I tried again to wrench it into shape rather than replace. I will wait until tomorrow to test the repair. I suspect it won’t be good.

ParticipantNew tube.

ParticipantYah, I just did the new tube. I bought a new pump (I didn’t have a legitimate one at my house) and a presta valve adapter (so I can use the pump for this air matress in a pinch or if I’m feeling lazy). Of course I put the new tube in without a problem while grilling dinner outside. Then this morning I realized I must not have centered the tire or bumped the brakes taking it off. So I tried to re-center the tire and adjust the brakes, but to no avail. The right pad is still leaning against it. So Metro for me two days in a row. And I hate Metro. So tonight I will give my half an hour to get it right or I’ll just take it by the shop and ask them to adjust–probably better.
I need to take a refresher course in bike repair. It’s funny that I used to be good at doing my brakes and took forever to change a tire and now it’s the reverse. C’est le vie.

ParticipantTerpfan, If your use V-brakes make sure the return spring has not come lose from it’s anchor point on the brake arm. I was having trouble this morning getting my wheel to spin freely until I noticed the spring was disconnected… Bike repair often involves unanticipated complications which is why we have spare bikes… Remind me to fix my spare bike…

Yeah, I joined Twitter but haven’t figured out how to use it yet. :p I guess an adjustable wrench doesn’t work for tweeting, but my second attempt to tweak my rim with a crescent wrench worked way better than expected. I think I can roll with this wheel and save the spare rim for later.
