ParticipantWMATA has gotten better about thinking about bikes.
My guess is that they are leaving a blank slab of concrete open in case Fairfax gets around to offering bikeshare.

ParticipantAnother update:
http://fabb-bikes.blogspot.com/2013/08/fairfax-bike-projects-receive-funding.html
“Transportation Alternatives is the consolidated program in the latest federal transportation law, MAP-21, that funds expanded travel choices like bicycling and walking, or that make other enhancements like mitigating the environmental impacts of transportation facilities. The Transportation Planning Board (TPB) is the entity tasked with allotting this money in the DC Region.
“Fairfax County will receive funding to install bike stations and operating hardware to support the expansion of Capital Bikeshare to Reston, which the County hopes will give people more options for accessing Metrorail stations along the planned Silver Line.”
So it looks like Capital Bikeshare in Reston is a go.

Just to tie a couple threads together, the MAP-21 funding also will help out with the 14th Street Bridge and TR Island parking lot: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?5648-MAP-21-Improvements-(14th-Street-Bridge-amp-TR-Island)

ParticipantGood news! I look forward to seeing more details as they come out.

ParticipantFrom one of the earlier articles (I don’t remember which one), someone from Fairfax County (I think, but I’m not sure) said that they wanted to try to have bikeshare installed near some of the new Metro Silver Line stations around the time that the rail line opened. The Silver Line opening date has been pushed back to January or so. I’m not sure if Fairfax would bother with installing bike stations in the middle of winter. If that’s the case, then maybe they would add the first stations by early spring. This is just speculation on my part, but it’s a possible timeline, depending on when they get the federal funding.
Or maybe everything is moving along faster than anyone realizes and they add the bike stations before the Silver Line opens. That too is speculation on my part.

ParticipantHere are the quotes:
From the WTOP article in Dec. 2012:
Hunter Mill District Supervisor Cathy Hudgins tells WTOP via email that the county is also looking into bike sharing.
“(While) the time frame is not firm…it would be helpful to have in place when Dulles MetroRail arrives,” she says.
From the Examiner article in July 2012:
Officials say plans for bike sharing are still just being discussed and they aren’t sure if a Reston pilot would be plugged into the Capital Bikeshare brand already popular in the District and Arlington. But they said they hope some form of bike system will be in place in time for the opening of Metro’s Silver Line at Reston, slated for early 2014.

The officials also spoke about an eventual expansion to Dunn Loring-Merrifield (Mosaic) and Tysons Corner, depending on the success of the Reston pilot program. No word on if or when that would happen.

ParticipantI’m highly interested in seeing where they place stations. Unfortunately, I live at the NW corner of Reston, so there isn’t much around me to justify a station nearby, but I’m hoping there will be one within reasonable walking distance.

ParticipantIt could be a while before CaBi comes to Reston, unfortunately.

Charlie Strunk, Fairfax County Department of Transportation Bicycle Program Coordinator:
“We’ve been toying with Capital Bikeshare, Arlington’s doing it, D.C. of course is doing it, Alexandria, Montgomery County – it takes a special area, special density to make it work,” he adds. “Tysons is obviously a good choice, Dunn Loring-Merrifield with the Mosaic District is also another good choice.”
Even the Reston bikes will not be rolling any time soon. “Realistically, I think it’s going to be at least two years,” Strunk says. Some Fairfax County leaders had hoped bikesharing would be available in time for the Silver Line’s opening early next year.
The program could expand later, but expanding Bikeshare to Reston does create some significant challenges since the area is so far removed from the rest of the system.

ParticipantMinor update, Jan. 30, 2014:
The Reston feasibility study for bikeshare is expected to be completed by late spring. They are studying possible user demand, possible station locations and funding sources. Then they will decide if and how to proceed from there.

ParticipantOct. 23, 2015 update
http://wtop.com/fairfax-county/2015/10/board-oks-grant-requests-new-fairfax-bike-routes/
The Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to support grant applications for the purchase of 130 Bikeshare bikes and about 250 docks. The grants would fund progress on new bike routes, make it easier to get to Ft. Belvoir from the Franconia-Springfield Metro and VRE stations, and improve access to the Van Dorn Street Metro station.
…
Adam Lind, bike program manager of the Fairfax transportation department, is working to build the needed infrastructure for the bikeshare stations. The new grant, which the county hopes will be approved next year, would go to purchasing the actual equipment needed.
There’s no specific date for the system to be in place. Lind hopes it can be done toward the end of 2016 or early 2017.
The initial 13 stations would connect the Wiehle-Reston East Metro station to the Reston Town Center area and hospital, and several other nearby locations, like The Spectrum shopping center.
“The ultimate plan is to continue to grow the system as the Silver Line moves out west, and additionally we are exploring the options of moving out toward Merrifield and Tysons in the future,” Lind said.
…
So maybe in 1.5 years? Maybe?

ParticipantI’m confused about how bikeshare in Reston affects movement between Franconia and Belvoir. That’s a long detour.
October 26, 2015 at 7:36 pm #1040085ShawnoftheDread
ParticipantI think there should be an “also” between grants and would in the second descriptive sentence. They approved bike share grants for Reston and trail improvement grants for the other areas.

ParticipantI copied and pasted directly from the article. But I also cut out some sections, where the ellipses are.
I left the sentence about Ft. Belvoir to indicate that the grants will cover more than just the bike stations and bikes.
