ParticipantNo offense, but I thought this post was going to be an off-topic thread about a formerly-music-themed cable television station…

That ain’t walkin’. That’s the way you do it, you get your Segway on the MTV.

ParticipantI should have done a better job of proofing my post. I fixed the spellings in the body of the text, but alas I can’t fix the title.

I’m just giving you a hard time…For as many Segways as I’ve seen downtown, I don’t think I’ve seen one on any of the VA trails. Seems like a bad place to have a dead battery…also, do they technically violate the trail rules, since they’re motorized?

ParticipantMy main issue with segways is that they get all the negatives of motorized vehicles (effortless speed and the lack of attention that comes with), with all the negatives of pedestrians (totally random movement). I know those segway tours on the mall are irritating as hell when I’ve come across them. Predicting their movement is like predicting what any single fish in a whole school will do.

ParticipantIt was a good catch. As it turns out, Segways are not permitted on the trail.
From the NPS web site http://www.nps.gov/gwmp/planyourvisit/mtvernontrail.htm
Motorized vehicles, including skateboards, bicycles, scooters, and Segways are not allowed on the Mount Vernon Trail. Persons with disabilities may use motorized wheelchairs on the trail.

I like the fish analogy. I always thought of it like I’m trying to be the gutter ball in bowling….trying desperately…and one day I will probably come close to inadvertently scoring a strike.

ParticipantSegways are an abomination. E-bikes I don’t particularly mind but one reason I’m dubious about adjusting trail regulations to allow e-bikes is the possibility that it would also let in segways. Maybe I’m just being irrational, but I just loath those things. The meter maids and tourists in the District on them are a menace.

Someone somewhere is saying the same thing about bicycles.

My sister-in-law is only 18, and last year she came to visit my wife and I. Wife was at work one day and I was off, so I took her on a Segway tour. It was the most fun I’ve ever had being a tourist. Honestly, if you ride one, you would probably love it immediately.
I think the problem is that most people on Segways are tourists, and most tourists are idiots, so people think that Segway riders must be idiots. But I assure you, Segways are actually awesome.

I’m pretty sure that by your logic, most of the people who think that are idiots.

ParticipantI once saw a man on a Segway tour down Bourbon Street in New Orleans with a little lap dog strapped to his chest in what looked more or less like a Baby Bjorn. I’m pretty sure the man was wearing Crocs, but I can’t swear to it.
All Segway riders I’ve seen since then have been judged against this man and found lacking.

Absolutely, in fact I’ve got a quote somewhere around here from a then Fairfax transportation official who called bicycles a “menace” after some folks had the audacity to suggest that maybe bikes could ride on some of the Fairfax roads. So I’m always really self-conscious when saying things like that about other modes. But I make an exception for segways. They’re evil. Although, I’m sure Steve is right that they are also fun to ride. But they’re still evil., Everyone’s got to have their prejudices. One of mine is the segway,
