ParticipantThat long segment might be problematic due to a lack of GPS signal in the Paw Paw Tunnel. I don’t know how Strava would handle that.
Also, it may take time for Strava to populate segments from earlier rides.July 16, 2013 at 6:01 pm #975534Bilsko
ParticipantIf I recall correctly, Strava won’t retroactively apply Segment standings. If you create a segment on July 15 based on a ride taken on July 10, then it will only start counting for anyone who rode the segment after your July 10th ride – but it should include people who rode the segment on the same ‘inaugural’ ride as you. (I could be wrong on that, but its been my experience in the past).
Segment tracking is still very imperfect – if your fellow riders aren’t seeing a particular segment that they rode show up, then there’s a pretty convenient request form to have Strava staff manually link a segment to a ride. They’ve always been responsive and accurate when I’ve made requests (like twice)
I’m anxious to see some of the segments you came up with – I’ve found that there’s just not a lot of Strava recording going on on the C&O…

Do things get wonky with these longer segments? Thanks for any explanation. I’ll probably delete the segments because it’s no fun there alone.
Longer segments do seem to get wonky. I’ve created a few private segments for my commute (just to gauge my speeds) but often I only get a few runs through a segment actually show up despite the fact that I’ve ridden my commute hundreds of times. Strava seems to have issues with normal GPS variance over longer distances.
Not sure what the solution is. I never really cared enough to really dig into it.

Shouldnt it follow the water a little closer?

No–that’s incorrect. It takes a little while for Strava to retroactively build the leaderboard, so if you check it immediately after creating it then you will only see yourself. If you come back a few hours later everything should be right with the world.

ParticipantI think I prefer the towpath without people shouting STRAVA as they speed past. Note that there’s also a 15MPH speed limit, so I would suspect that you’d either end up with a cluster of people all around the same speed, or you’d be encouraging scofflawism.

Hmmm . . . I see the problem. I failed to consider that some of my fellow riders would follow the path and not my ELITE route through the woods (same goes for my ride across the Potomac and back the following day).
I’m pretty sure you can get on the leaderboard for a segment retroactively; that appears to have happened for the first of the segments I created — up to the campground — there are activities dating back to 2010.
This isn’t something I care to dig into too much, either, but I thought it would be fun. I suspect GPS reception is not the best out in the boonies, so it might be tough even for a shorter segment to track well across riders.
Thanks, all.

I’ve never tried it, but this might fix the problem: http://strava-tools.raceshape.com/snap/

ParticipantGood to know that it’ll fill in the leaderboard going back in time – guess I’ve always been too impatient to wait and see and too forgetful to go back and check.

Luckily Raceshape appears to be one of the very few 3rd party tools that still has API access to Strava data.

Oh, I think the big guys (mostly?) got approval. A couple others:

ParticipantI hadn’t been to Strabbaranks in awhile–I like the new interface. And I think I need to start working on “The List” again!

Interesting! I couldn’t make it work with an “off road” route though.
I created a handful of shorter segments where my data appeared to track the trail very closely and they all seem to have populated as expected. I also think I just handed Pete’s friend he mentioned earlier today a bunch of retroactive QOMs.
I also figured out there are a few C&O segments for which I don’t show up on the leaderboard, I assume for the same reasons identified above. Oh well, it’s not a perfect science.
Thanks again.

Yes, I should say so! Actually, I think veloviewer has a more interesting alternative to Strabbaranks — “Rivals”. I am pretty sure you are featured prominently on that list for me
