This doesn’t have too much to do with cycling, although the proposed site is near the Eisenhower Ave. bike path in Alexandria. A developer sent an unsolicited proposal to the City of Alexandria for a large sports and entertainment complex to be built on city property at Hensley Park.

Nothing has been decided yet, not even whether the site is an appropriate place for a new sports complex. Local residents may want to participate in the process and provide input on whether this is a good idea or not. (I don’t live in Alexandria so this proposal doesn’t affect me one way or another. But I do think it’s cool that they would include an aquatic center, along with a field house, a gymnastics center, basketball courts, batting cages, climbing walls, a driving range, strength and cardio equipment and two large ice rinks.)

If this is built eventually, I hope they would include bike connector trails and bike parking. CaBi is expanding to the Carlyle/Eisenhower Ave. Metro area this year. Maybe Alexandria would add bike stations along Eisenhower Ave. later on, heading out toward this new sports center.
