    From Arlington DES:

“Join us next Tuesday, June 11 at 11 a.m. to celebrate the completion of the S. Joyce Street Shared-Use Sidewalk Project at the corner of S. Joyce Street and Army Navy Drive! Wider sidewalks, a new median barrier and narrower lanes, street lights, curb ramps, and new markings create a friendly, urban and less industrial-style environment!”

Wait, that’s done? I was there during Bike To Work Week, and the connection from Columbia Pike was HORRIBLE, at least on the west side. After the construction entrance, it’s beautiful, but it’s worse than a normal sidewalk to get there.

I would suggest poking your friendly DES staff planner about the connection at the next BAC meeting.

I’ve ridden along the new Joyce Street several times. Very well done. So much better than it was just last year.

But it’s sad that the large parking lots along Columbia Pike were closed and torn up. That was a great place for short hill workouts, running and biking. We can still use the sidewalk on the north side of Columbia Pike, but that needs work. I will say that the contractors did fix one problem on the Columbia Pike sidewalk. A couple months ago, there was an asphalt obstacle across the sidewalk, in front of the Navy Annex demolition zone. Terrible on bike tires. But I noticed that the asphalt “speed bump” has now been removed. The sidewalk still isn’t great but it is a bit smoother than it was last month.
