Rode this morning and was suprised to see a ramp over a pipe on the trail

Across from the Giant. I walked my bike over the ramp. Looked too exciting with the wet plywood.

I rode by as they were building (err…putting it together) last night and one of the boards hadn’t been screwed down yet giving it a really nice Evel Knievel angle to it. I was in a hurry to keep riding through the rain so I just rode around through the grass.

I think that the folks that did this had considered the potential impact on trail users and appreciate that. My post and photo was intended not to hammer them but to let others know to expect something new.

Lesser contractors would have just put some caution tape up and called it a day. Kudos to the contractor and contract managers from whoever is paying for the work (Arlington?). Looks like a sewer line to me.

Ok, maybe a little too much implicit snark on my part. It’s definitely a dismount and walk your bike moment. And hopefully your bike isn’t packed too wide in back.

These orange cones are actually serving a useful function. I have no reason to dislike cones that are used correctly (and will go back to the big cone warehouse when their job is done).

It’s actually kind of fun to ride over, at least when it’s dry out. This morning they had even put asphalt down to smooth out the ends.

Wouldn’t it just be easier to take the sidewalk and cut back to the trail over the grass? Will the pipe go over the sidewalk as well at some later time?

Just spoke with the Arlington County project manager. The pipe will be a sewer bypass so they can reline an existing sewer pipe in the area. The project will be over in about mid-June. It appears to be in Phase II. The project manager said that he had asked the contractor to make the ramp wider.

Sounds to me like most everything is working the way we would want it with trail preservation, engaged management, etc. Thanks Arlington!
