So there I was, top down (wishing I could have ridden in this a.m.) on Kirkwood Road in Arlington. Mom and young elementary school daughter had their helmets on and were walking their bikes through the crosswalk. Our lane stopped to allow them to cross. They stopped in a cutout between the center island before crossing the on coming lane and a guy in a Silver Accord is speeding down the road from the other direction. I’m facing him so I see that he looks right at them with plenty of time to stop…and he just keeps his foot on the gas and blows through the crosswalk. Jack@ass.
Here is a mom teaching her child the beauty of an early morning ride and she learns another lesson too: some drivers simply can’t be bothered to slow up – or actually follow the law and stop for people in a crosswalk. So every single time you hit the bike, you take risk of losing your life by a careless or, as in this case, an arrogant driver who just does not care. Yes, they are they exception, but there remain far, far too many of them.
