Shouldda let you take a spin this morning. Will definitely let you roll around whenever you’re feeling adventurous. Eggbeater/SPDs ok, right?

I am dreading the climb up to Macarthur & Foxhall from Canal Rd. Not sure which will be harder though, standing up and pedaling up or getting off and pushing a 45lb beast up.

The Strava power numbers will be interesting! (assuming you input that bike)

Oh right! I almost forgot to add the new bike to my list.

ParticipantActually, this brings up an honest question….what is the purpose of a fatbike? I mean, I get that they’d be fun for singletrack and all that stuff, but most (all?) seem to be single speed, which would limit your terrain choices. So what’s the deal?

Lots of SS fatbikes, but I think most of Surly’s builds come well-geared. The Walgoose is probably a little too heavy for the serious technical terrain, but a lighter (25-30lb) option from Surly or custom carbon builds can go on some pretty gnarly terrain.
Great for snow riding, good on sand (although I’ve learned that the beach I have easy access too doesn’t allow bikes). Here’s a good example: http://www.ericlarsenexplore.com/expedition/cyclesouth
A few more tame examples: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=fatbike&page=&utm_source=opensearch
Also youtube: “Surly Moonlander” “Surly pugsley” “Surly Neck Romancer”

ParticipantAnd I thought my Bike Friday and my Tour Easy were oddballs. No longer.
BTW, for some reason I am wondering what happens if you put helium in those tires.

I don’t know, but I have already clicked the ELITE button for when it happens.
