Commuters text while driving more than teens, AT&T-sponsored survey finds

I could have told the researchers this. I did a quick survey one morning when I was riding in a taxi. I looked out the window to see what the nearby drivers were doing while crossing the 14th St. Bridge. Seven out of 20 were texting/websurfing while they were driving. To make matters worse, the cab driver suddenly reached over in a panic to the glove box on the front passenger side. I thought there was an emergency. He could barely reach the compartment while he was buckled in the driver seat. What was so important that he had to stop looking at the road? He retrieved a bottle of hand lotion and began applying it to his hands. True story.

And it’s not as though he had been driving for hours. When I got into the taxi at a taxi stand area, he had been standing around on the sidewalk chatting with other taxi drivers. I don’t see how his hands would have become so chapped from doing that.
