ParticipantI believe it’s just before the Cherrydale Safeway (N Monroe St) as you head west from I-66. It looks like they have finished most of the construction on the new building there and have repaved the inside lane which probably resulted in having to stripe the bike lane. There is a bike lane there on east bound Lee Highway from Quincy/Military to I-66.

Where is this?
Looks like Lee Highway and North Monroe Street: http://goo.gl/maps/d3cSA
It’d be nice if they were able to extend it to Military Road, as that would create a more bikeable connection between Military Road and the Custis Trail. They already have a bike lane going eastbound on that stretch.
*EDIT* Blargh, I went to do something else before finishing my post only to discover Shawn and consular had answered the question! My apologies for the repeat in answer.

ParticipantI can confirm it’s between Lee & Monroe N and Lee & Monroe N (no, that’s not a typo — Monroe doglegs at Lee, and there are two lights – one for Monroe southbound and one for Monroe northbound). The bike lane runs along the new construction, stops at the Safeway.
I discovered it last night, too. Unfortunately, I didn’t know that it ended (you’re cresting a hill there), and had a hairy situation with a MetroBus… It is a nice addition, it would be nicer if it at least started at the bottom of the hill at Spout Run (there’s PLENTY of room).
On a happy note, last night at the Cherrydale Citizens Association meeting, there was some positive reception to the idea of a protected cycletrack along Lee from Cherrydale to Rosslyn. Whoo-hoo!

Better watch, they’ll probably put speed cameras on the downhills.

ParticipantYes, between Monroe and Monroe. I captured the street signs in the photo. It would be nice if the lane was extended all the way between falls church and Rosslyn. Perfect alternative to the custis, and much smoother.

ParticipantA protected cycletrack would be nice. I ride on Lee fairly regularly and I often don’t use the bike lane going downhill because it’s in the door zone, I’ve had other bad experiences with cars there, and you often go as fast as traffic anyway.
Also, I wish 29/Old Dominion between Military and 309/Old Dominion (confusing I know) had at a minimum, sharrows. I’ve often gone up there with cars impatiently passing, yet once you turn right onto 309/Old Dominion, there is suddenly a nice bike lane (which then disappears again by 120/Glebe Rd). It’s also annoying because while there are 3 lanes (1 for going straight, 1 for going right, and 1 in which you can do either), drivers going right often stay all the way right while passing too close, even though they then have to merge left anyway once they turn right on 309/Old Dominion.

I keep meaning to type to the forum a nice little alternative to taking Lee Hwy downhill under 66, then turning left to get on the Custis*. From heading eastbound on Lee after 5 Points (Lee/Old Dominion/Military/Quincy), turn right on Monroe, then turn left onto 20th Street. Zooooooooom down the hill, and right after the street starts going back uphill, there’s an entrance to the Custis.** Turn left and you’re a few yards from the bridge over Lee. Viola, no left turn from Lee.
*I know plenty of people head down Lee and don’t get on the Custis there, behind Lyon Village Shopping Center. More power to you. This is just a route for those who do.
**This entrance is totally blind to folks heading east. How can a gal get a mirror-thingy installed there?

Sounds very sensible, thanks!
