I’m not sure if it’s best for everyone, but I prefer to stay on off-road trails as much as possible, and use a route like this: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2176315

They may be more direct routes on streets, though. Also, the Sligo Creek and NW branch trails in this area get pretty quiet late at night, so consider that if you’re concerned about riding alone.

Don’t know where in Takoma Park you are, but starting from the Carroll/Laurel/Eastern triangle:

South on Laurel, cross over into DC
    Turn right on Aspen
Turn left on Piney Branch (bike lanes)
    Piney Branch turns into 13th
    Turn right on Colorado
Turn left on 14th (bike lanes)
At U Street, you could hop over to 15th Street if you want to ride in the cycle track and avoid Thomas Circle.
Turn left on G Street to destination

This takes you into downtown a little west of your destination, but it takes advantage of bicycle lanes and optionally, cycletrack.

I used to commute this way and it was safe and direct. Good luck!

Both Greenbelt’s and Liz’s paths are good suggestions. I have three routes that I alternate depending on the day: 1) a modified version of Liz’s, 2) taking Piney Branch to Blair to 5th and 6th downtown (through Howard’s campus and by the reservoir, cutting over past Chinatown), and 3) the MBT (which takes a couple of extra miles to get to and has a nasty hill, but also some nice straight lines…eventually). You might start with 5th/6th first just because it’s a touch calmer. 14th has lanes almost all the way, but there’s more than a little construction south of U street which impedes the lane and cars are fast fast fast.

Note that Takoma Park is scheduled to join Capital Bikeshare later this year. There could be 5 CaBi stations in/around Takoma Park and a couple stations near the Takoma Metro station in D.C.

If you aren’t already a CaBi member, it’s worth looking into. Download the free Spotcycle app to a smartphone (if you have one). The app posts near-real time data on the number of bikes and empty slots at CaBi stations. Good to know if you’re not sure there are any bikes at the nearby station. It’s also important to know if your destination station has any free slots. (Downtown D.C. stations fill up fast in the morning rush hour.)

I second Liz’s route. When I work in Arlington I use part of her route to get there from Silver Spring. The only change I would suggest is that you might try staying on 13th until Florida, then cutting over to 14th. The bike lanes tend to disappear on 14th in Columbia Heights, and you can expect long waits at the lights through there. 13th is narrower, but the traffic is pretty slow along 13th with all the stop signs. Try both ways and see which you prefer.

I now have an abundance of options.

I took the cycletrack up 15th than over to 14th and then meandered on some back roads to where I wanted to be (near Shepherd Park, so not quite TP, but close). I’ve also done 15th up to 16th and then road up 16th partially on street and partially on sidewalk. The 14th side is better. 16th street you deal with a lot of parked cars and needing to merge over and if you switch to the sidewalk then there seems to be some glut of giant tree branches the whole way.

Liz’s way makes sense in my head. Really you could do any of those posted here. My only qualm with going on 13th is that it’s slower, but more residential so more stop signs, more dooring scenarios, etc.

Depending on where you’re originating in Takoma, my route (pieced together from advice from many of the folks on here):
    1) Flower Avenue
    2) Maple
    3) Pick a road to cut over to 3rd
    4) 3rd to Kansas
    5) Kansas to 13th
Note: I like 13th more than 14th. No bike lanes, but 14th seems like its completely torn apart. I also notice a lot more bikers on there. Fine if they were as law abiding as the folks here, but almost everyone I see riding on 14th rides like a maniac with a death wish. Running red lights, pulling in front of me, not stopping in a line…it’s CHAOS! I have none of these problems on 13th, and as long as I leave the house by around 7:00 AM, I avoid crazy rush hour traffic.

…what is the best way to get from the tail end of the MBT (at Union Station) across town to Metro Center? Every road looks like a bicyclist death trap! H St. would be the most direct, but I doubt that would be a wise choice.

From Union Station, E St NW has a bike lane.
