Anyone know what’s up with the fence made of branches and scrapwood that has slowly arisen off the path just above the “U-Turn” ramp to the TR Island parking lot? I think the hobo that lives there is building it.
No skin off my nose, but I’ve been watching its progress with some bemusement.
Just passed that this morning and named it “Found Object Garden.”
Somebody’s got time to build it, and then watch NPS (I think it’s their land) tear it down some day.

ParticipantI never go this way, can someone snap a pic of this? I’m insanely curious.

ParticipantI think there is a group of homeless that are living on the other side of the fence. It has been there for quite a while.

I’ve only seen one person there, occasionally dragging branches up the trail from the river.
I think it may be private property. I remember reports a number of years ago about the owner wanting to build on the strip of land between the trail and the GW Parkway ramp. I don’t think this construction was what he had in mind.

ParticipantI can’t help but think of “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” every time I ride by. I keep imagining that a couple of limeys are going to jump out of the bushes, demanding donations for passage through Sherwood or something.

ParticipantIt’s one guy that lives there, and he’s been known to have the occasionally friendly conversation with folks. Yes, it’s private property*, but I hope folks will just let him be. Been there for years, and never – to my knowledge – has he been a problem to anyone.
*Possibly the most valuable piece of undeveloped private property in DC, depending on what the judge sez.

Indeed. I’ve heard he’s been deported once or twice, and just headed back each time. I guess Home really is where your heart is, whether it’s a McMansion in Loudon County or a rudimentary shelter behind a makeshift fence on the bank of the Potomac!

ParticipantI’ve seen this guy pretty much every day I’ve commuted since I moved. While I was obviously pregnant, he’d give me the big thumbs up. When I returned from maternity leave, he noticed. He’s always communicated to me with gestures, so I assumed he didn’t speak English (I’ve said hi when close enough). He’s always been nice enough to me.
The structure is really cool. I, too, hope he isn’t harassed. He’s definitely a pleasant part of my day.

ParticipantThe area in front of the fence is cleaner than most parts of the trail. Absent those pesky property ownership issues Mark alluded to, this gentleman seems like a fine neighbor. I’m with Mark, live and let live.

Yeah, he’s not a problem, and he’s creating something that is different and breaks up the monotony of that ugly neglected area. Which is why it will probably be taken down soon.

ParticipantJust to clarify, he’s a squatter not the actual property owner, right?
