I am going to the LCI Seminar at WABA Mar 1 – 3, then the women’s summit on March 4th. please email me at ironmarianne@gmail.com as I don’t know where to stay (cheaply!). I live in Little Rock, AR and looking forward to revisiting one of my favorite cities. So I need lodging Fri – Sunday nights and a bike!! I am familiar with the metro system, just not sure my best location to attend the seminar. I see the bike the sites link but again, not sure what is best plan. I get in at 11:40 on Friday and have a few hours before 5 p.m. start.. so thinking I should get the bike that afternoon.

I work in Chainwheel, local bike store down here and will get my pedals off my bike. Anyways, any advice or helpful hints would be appreciated. I am open to staying in a hostel although never stayed in one or sharing a room with another female!! and want a road bike to use. gonna count on the honesty of the local cycling community!!! if you can? since I just joined this forum, can you email me at ironmarianne@gmail.com or phone at 501 4540476, I am getting spammed though so leave a message if I don’t pick up!! cuz I will be at work today at Chainwheel.

It’s not a road bike, but I would look in to using capital bikeshare at least for transportation

If she’s taking the LCI course, she’s not going to be able to use a bikeshare bike.

Marianne, what size bike are you looking for? There are probably people here who could loan you a bike for the LCI course. Also, you are not allowed to use your road shoes with cleats for the LCI course, so you may want to bring flat pedals or something that is not too difficult to ride with sneakers.

As for lodging, unfortunately, I am 15 miles from DC so I can’t give you any great advice. The LCI course is grueling and practically around the clock, so I’d say stay as close as possible. Can someone else offer advice, as near to Adams Morgan as possible?

Thanks for your contributions to the cycling community in Little Rock! Good luck with the LCI course.

(this is my 3rd time to type this as I as having tech difficulties!!) so now I am briefer
    1. Booked Windsor Hotel as it was cheapest, free wifi, bfast and only .8 mile from WABA and one mile from Renaissance. I can cancel if I need to by 28 Feb so there is that!!
    2. left message with Bike the Sights as their road bikes are closed for the season but Union Station has comfort bikes,, hope to hear back from them.

    3. I would love to borrow a bike!! good info on flat pedals, I will bring some if needed. I am 5’4″, 120 lbs and rode a small Trek tri bike Speed concept.
    4. I work part time at Chainwheel, lbs, but started my own business Beyond Fit, LLC (FB, Pinterest & Twitter) and wanted the soonest LCI certification even though we have it in mid April… so I got on DC wait list and got in!! so did a combo with women’s summit! so now I have a place to stay and am all signed up !!! with no bike, which I can see the funny side of that!! I am sure it will all work out and I can change lodging for less $ if something comes up. Part of the fun of cycling is the adventure!!! YOLO

I looked up WABA to be 2599 Ontario Road, NW which is where I think the seminar to be… and so I got a hotel at 1842 16th Street, NW. now if the seminar is somewhere else, I might need to know that!!! on 2nd thought!!

Have you asked the WABA folks directly about borrowing a bike?

No I haven’t asked WABA, wow, what a good idea!

in the meantime, bikes the sights called me back and I wondered if for LCI, I needed a hybrid or a road bike. FYI if you rent for more than one day, the price drops 50%. anyways, I have emailed the League about that ?. so the bike rental would be picked up at Union Station if I need to rent from Bike the sights. so whew… I have a bike!!

I forgot to mention that I’m a genius.

Good! Good thing you called ahead too, because I think they only have road bikes at the other location. They are probably going to go get one for you to pick up at Union Station.

When I took the course, most people had road bikes but there were a couple with hybrids. You will be demonstrating your proficiency at the skills drills from Traffic Skills 101 so it needs to be a bike you can handle well.

Also, though you didn’t ask, I think it’s important to tell you that for the “road test,” the LCI candidates ride a six mile course through DC in small groups (four students plus one instructor in each group), with the candidates taking turns leading the group. The WABA staff designs the course and they make sure it has some of the trickiest intersections in DC — it’s challenging for those us who ride here everyday, in fact, I think only one of my fellow students got through without a single mistake (he posts on this forum at times; you know who you are and kudos). If I were you, I’d pick up the DC Bike Map at the WABA office and study it carefully along with the cue sheet to familiarize yourself with the route.

I am not famliar with your hotel, but it is very near WABA, and in a safe and busy part of town.

Oh gREAT!!! I went to Traffic Skills 101 here in Little Rock yesterday afternoon and I KNOW those roads and still made a mistake on a merge road cuz the upcoming lane had a washed out white line… well long story short, we were all safe as the car behind let us over to go left to get to the coffee shop.. but nice of you to tell me about DC! won’t this be an adventure to demonstrate my traffic skills! I will rent a road bike since that is what I am most familiar with and you are right they will deliver to Union Station. Thanks on hotel, yes the person booking it looked up the distance to the WABA ctr. I figured with those long days, I wanted to be close!! gouging me on the Sunday night pre conference though. well not gouging but doubling! is that technically a gouge/!!

Little Rock, why come here. In september we have a famous Big Dam Bridge 100 and shorter distances that goes over our world’s longest pedestrian/cycling bridges. over the Arkansas River joining LR to NLR. It is our biggest century in the state. Our Marathon coming up has the largest marathon medals… all sorts of mt biking, triathlons, canoeing, etc makes our motto “Arkansas is a natural”.. very true! I read on the League website that Arkansas ranks 50th, but I personally think our adventuresome athletics is one of our best assets.

Have a Great President’s day! I have some homework to do so scooting off. m
