ParticipantThanks, I think I’m good. Sore ribs and a knot on my forearm. I haven’t examined the bike closely, but I’m guessing it’s totaled. I have the cabbie’s insurance info and I filed a police report.
Worth noting that the cab who hit me was the third cab to turn illegally in a two block span, and both the cab and I may have been distracted by the second turner. I’ll post gory pictures of my bike later.

ParticipantGood to hear from you. I’ll send you a PM.

ParticipantSorry to hear about your crash, glad you weren’t hurt worse. At least you get to shop for a new bike. Are you able to salvage parts?

ParticipantHaven’t examined the bike that closely. Plenty should be salvageable. Not sure how that works with insurance companies? Going to call them when my wife gets home.

ParticipantOh no! Glad you are only dented a bit.

From folks I know who have had bikes damaged in accidents, take it to a reputable shop and get a written estimate to make it whole again, submit that estimate to the insurance company. The shop can decide what needs replacing and what is salvageable.

ParticipantYikes! Glad to hear you are largely ok. That is so scary. Take the cabbie to the cleaners.
I know there was a WABA or BicycleSpace initiative recently to get U-turns outlawed. The law was revised accordingly but we obviously need physical barriers to protect cyclists. Anybody know if the initiative also included a petition (with signatures) to put up barriers? I’m under the impression that some sort of “arts” commission controls what goes on PA Ave and would have to approve bollards being installed.

Glad to hear you’re okay. Was the driver ticketed? Seems like your situation would be one of the first real tests of the Gary’s emergency proclamation.

ParticipantDang, man. I’m glad you’re not badly hurt.
We need to get those pylons back, and this BS about taking them out all winter because of snow removal is just that: BS. It didn’t snow at all last year, and might not this year either. And if it does snow a lot, and it’s difficult to plow the lanes, so be it. It’ll be difficult to plow the 15th street track too. We’d rather survive in the meantime and deal with that contingency if it occurs.

ParticipantSorry this happened. Very glad you’re ok. Do you know if the cabbie was ticketed?
I would be happy to copy-and-paste an email or print-and-sign a letter to relevant powers that be about getting the bollards back, if someone were to post something and directions as to where to send…

ParticipantI have an email thread with Jim Graham (Ward 1 councilmember) and DC police chief Lanier about this very problem from a month or so back. I will be picking up that discussion where it left off.
Also, I just realized I need to thank the clueless pedestrian waiting in the middle of the bike lane against the light at 14th. I rang my bell and just got a dumb look. If I hadn’t had to slow down for her, I might have ended up underneath the cab instead of bouncing off the back.
So, whoever you are, thanks for being so clueless.

ParticipantDonning my “bicycle industry professional” hat for a moment, a bike crashed by a car should be a total write off.
The simplest reason is that the cab driver ruined a perfectly good bike that you bought as a whole package, and that’s what they need to replace. The salvage value – what a shop would give you to strip those parts for the opportunity to re-sell them as used – is nil. Even if there are parts that you personally wouldn’t trash, the economic value (and what insurance should deduct from the compensation they’ll pay you) is zero.

+1, you should get a new bike out of this and keep the parts for a future build.

ParticipantI like the sound of that, but is there a legal basis?
I’m no mechanic, so I can’t say anything for sure. But the handlebars were twisted (since straightened by hand). The right brifter is pointing way too far left, though that may just be it sliding around the bar, not actual damage. The rear wheel will not turn more than a few inches at a time. The wheel looks a little bent, and the front and rear derailleurs are way out of whack. Can’t tell if they’re damaged or just crooked. My front light is toast. The rear one is crooked, but doesn’t appear broken.
I’m taking it to the shop where i bought it for an inspection tomorrow, probably.

ParticipantI saw this while I was in China recently. Lets just place one of these to the middle between the two bike lanes.
