I don’t know about those strap on cast things, but it is DANG hard to clip in and clip out with a cleat attached to the bottom of a normal cast.

Obviously the doubts I expressed last week about clips were misplaced. I would add that I sprained my foot back in August and didn’t go to the doctor for a brace specifically because I had discovered that while it was painful and awkward to walk on the bad foot it was almost unnoticeable when riding. It was actually easier to ride than to drive in terms of the pain of operating the pedals when I drove eight hours back from Maine where I did the damage.

Very true, but many injuries like that do NOT like the twisting required to get in and out of clipless pedals.

Not to take this conversation in a totally different direction… But this is something that I thought might help when thinking about stuff like this…..

I will also say this: Be really, really, really careful riding while injured. It really sucks complicating an injury because you were riding hurt. Following doctor’s recommendations pretty closely. Lots of things that are easily fixable become MUCH MORE DIFFICULT to fix when re-injured.

I haven’t ridden with a cast since I was MUCH younger… back when casts were not removable and had a metal or rubber plug on the bottom that you could use for walking.

About 7 years ago I fractured 4 ribs a few weeks before a series of riding events that I had been training for. It was mid April when originally sustained the injury. There’s not much you can do for rib injuries like that. They hurt like hell and really only hurt when you breathe. I rode through the season… occasionally doing stuff that re-injured the ribs… nothing really serious, just stuff that hurt quite a bit at the time, but the pain slowly went down and got to a bearable level. Mid November rolled on and I finally had the realization that my basic level of chronic pain was so bad that I needed some extended down time. What could have healed quite well in 4-6 weeks ended up taking the better part of 7 months and a whole lot of pain to really heal well.

That was a great wake-up call and a good opportunity to put some serious thought into what it takes to manage chronic pain. I guess we all do that as we get older. It doesn’t necessarily happen soon enough for some of the more stubborn of us.

I’ve got a pretty good regimen of stretching, yoga, strength training, massage, acupuncture, etc. to help keep chronic pain to a reasonable level. I’m moving better and feeling better than I have in more than 30 years.

While the things that I’ve done are only slightly related to riding while injured, I hope this has been a testament to being wise in how you approach riding while injured.

A friend at work broke her foot and was put in a boot and told to use crutches. She then found this bike-like thing that she used around the office because it was more comfortable than crutches, and had a little basket so she could hold things as she scooted. I was jealous that she got to bike around the office…

How about “Leipheimer” or “Contador” as first names with flair? Or “Cavendish?”

    Ryder Timothy

Named per the forum’s suggestion, and an unfortunate bet lost to Mr. Kelley… :-)

Sorry for the delay. I was totally going to keep responding and posting yesterday, but, alas, when you have a toddler, a newborn and your in-laws in town, you can’t always find time to finish what you start. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

Ryder (yes, that’s really his name — you’d laugh at how many people think we named him after Kate Hudson’s kid or the new character on Glee) was born 11/16 weighing just shy of 9 lbs and measuring 22 1/4″. Very tall and strong. Seems to be a sprinter in the making.

Thanks for all the well-wishes, and for being an entertaining distraction as we waited for our not-so-little-one to make his appearance.

Welcome Ryder Timothy! What a sweet not-so-little guy.

He arrived just a day before my son’s birthday, too.

If big sister doesn’t want to give up her seat, you could get one of these for Ryder:
