New Bike!!

Here are some pictures of my brand new Surly Cross-Check! I picked it up at Bicycle Space yesterday. I got the frame/fork and they built it up from old components from my Fuji and a new drive train. It’s the dark blue color that you can only get in the single speed or as frame/fork so it should be pretty unique.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a fitting that is LESS than $100? I know everyone talks up the people at Freshbikes but at least for now I don’t plan on doing long rides on this bike so $150 for a fitting just does not seem worth it. I’ll probably end up playing with the saddle position on my own if I can’t find anything inexpensive enough.

That is a beautiful bike and it’s very cool that you customized it according to what you wanted in a bike PLUS reused some components.

For the money, Feshbikes is the best for fitting.

But I had a good experience with Performance in Tysons when I was trying to get the most out of a cross bike. The bike was too big but he worked with me and replaced the handlebars, replaced the crank, and made some other adjustments to try and make the bike work.

It took at least two trips and probably about two hours of being in the shop pedaling in a trainer. It’s worth a call to see what they’d charge.

Great looking bike, and I agree with acc… awesome seeing you use existing parts and also knowing that Bicycle Space will work with you. As for fittings, I had Jeff Palmer at Spokes in Vienna fit me to my road bike a few years ago. He did a great job and was really easy to work with. Before parts the fitting was $125.00 I think. Their website has all the details and background info on each employee/fitter. Good luck and keep us posted!

very nice, i love quality steel frames. Sorry I don’t have recommendations for fittings.

Whenever I’ve bought a new bike, the shop includes a fitting for free. At least a simple seat post, saddle, stem tweaking, which is probably adequate since you said you wouldn’t be doing long rides. I’d check with them.

Yeah, Spokes did a pretty thorough free fitting when my wife bought her road bike there last year. The problem with Bicycle Space is that they don’t seem to have a trainer to set your bike up in so that you can sit and pedal to get that simple fitting. They don’t even have much wall space to lean against.

It is not confidence inspiring to watch a 150 pound dude trying with all his might to hold up my bike while I (255 pounds) mount it and pedal a few strokes during a “fitting”.
