    While BikeArlington will be doing a call for volunteers later today for our Lights events coming up in November, check out the Crystal City BID’s Light for Bikes giveaway happening this Friday:

    “Are you ready for Daylight Savings Time? Set your clocks back 1 hour this Sunday and be ready for an earlier sunset with the Crystal Ride Bike Light Giveaway! The Crystal City Business Improvement District will be stationed on the Mount Vernon Trail at the Crystal City Connector from 4 PM to 6 PM (or while supplies last) this Friday, November 2nd handing out free front “Bug Eye” lights and Tail Lights to any and all cyclists who stop by! Grab one of each for yourself or if you already have lights, give them to a friend or loved one!”

    They look pretty much like the BikeArlington Frog lights

    Met Joe and Other dude out there. The Crystal City BID did an awesome give-away. They had very nice lights and water bottles and tons of people stopped off to see them. It was cool to see them getting the south-bound Ninjas.

    Anyone else wonder why NPS doesn’t just go ahead and pave that dirt path from the MVT to the Crystal City connector? They keep trying to plant grass and protect that strip with green netting. But cyclists and pedestrians continue to ride straight from the north to the off-ramp.

    There would be no great loss to paving that small stretch of dirt. The grass will never grow there, while the new section of asphalt will make it more convenient for those turning off the MVT toward Crystal City.

    It once was paved. It probably would benefit from some large rocks to keep people on the trail. Might want the same approach at the VA side of the 14th St Bridge

    A commuting colleague (that I got into bike commuting!) and I went to grab some lights, and as we were checking them out, essigmw rolled up.

    My assumption is that people would turn on/off the CC connector carrying too much speed.

    That’s what I’d guess. Bushes would be more effective than letting the grass grow every now and then.

    Southbound cyclists ride up a slight incline before reaching the connector. (I haven’t ridden there in a few weeks, but I think that’s the case.) That should keep people from riding too quickly into the connector, wouldn’t it? I’ve always thought that forcing southbound cyclists to come to a near complete stop so that they can make that 90-degree turn has its own risks.
