My plan yesterday was to head from the Key Bridge to the 15th street cycle track, both because I had never ridden in a cycle track, and to eventually head down to Taste of DC.

I went from Key bridge to C&O tow path to Rock Creek trail, and then up the ramp at P street. I was going to head east on P and then left on 22nd I guess to Q street lanes – was checking my map, when a pedestrian asked where I was trying to go. I told him and he suggested going one block west and up to Q and then over the
parkway on Q, to avoid bad intersections on P. I did that and it worked, but I am wondering:

Given the configuration of Rock Creek Park, its exits, and the bridges over RCP, are there any other routes east from Key Bridge that don’t involve either heading down into the monumental core to cross, or going all the way up to Calvert? I have only ridden in DC a couple of times.

Try the TR Bridge. It puts you out east of RCP at Washington Circle.

I second the TR Bridge. The other option would be Key – M (sidewalks if you don’t like the street, but the street is ok) – Bank or 33rd – Volta – Wisconsin (for a block) Q, use Q to cross Rock Park and continue on your way. I don’t know why someone told you P is bad – Q is quieter (ha), but P is still pretty residential and I’ve never had a problem with it.

This is an old post but I found it because I had the same question as the original poster. I just biked to work for the first time today from Arlington to DC (Penn and 18th), and was trying to figure out how to get across RCP so that I could take the C&O trail through Georgetown instead of going down M St to get to Penn Av (M St wasn’t pleasant). You referred to the TR Bridge to get across RCP, can you spell that out please and tell me how I would get to it from the C&O Canal path in Georgetown? Thanks!
