    Could someone explain to me why someone would put aero bars on a unicycle? I saw this guys Monday at Gravelly Point trying to ride a unicycle with Tri-aero bars. I don’t understand:confused:

    Are you talking about a unicycle handlebar? I’ve seen them on offroad unicycles to help with hopping up terrain, and for comfortability on longer rides.

    It’s pretty common (as common as anything unicycle) on the 36″ touring rigs:

    There were at least 2 of these in Arlington over the last few years one had a crazy 3-speed hub (think about that for a second), in aero position 20mph on flats is not that hard to hit (fastest I know of is 30 with what must have been a blurring cadence)… now hills… hills are exciting and/or awful depending on the direction.

    I had one for a while. The bars really help if you’re doing any kind of distance. You’re much more aerodynamic and it is easier to hold a steady line. Some of the high-end 36er unicycles have internally geared hubs that let you change the gear ratio… kind of like shifting gears on a bicycle. In low, they can roll along at 15-17mph quite nicely. In high gear, they can get up in the low 20s. Moving that kind of speed, it helps to be doing something other than sitting straight up in the air.

    Think of it like a bicycle. You’re more stable if you have 5 contact points with the bike than if you have 4… or 3. Same thing goes with a unicycle.

    It also gives a good place to mount the brake lever.

    Off-road unicycles don’t have handlebars, but they do have a handle on the front of the saddle and a place to mount a brake lever. You definitely need a brake on most unicycles designed to really take you places (either on or off road).

    My fave was my mountain unicycle which sported a 26×4″ tire.

    You forgot Glow in the dark Mountain bike too.
