As they say, all predictions are uncertain, especially about the future. However, it does seem clearer that October might be a tad cooler than normal (a break from all the above-normal temps this whole year). The latest long-range forecasts from the Climate Prediction Center came out yesterday:

I’ve lived in the Northern Hemisphere all my life and so far it has gotten cooler every single Fall. I’ve heard from those much older than me that this has always been true as long as they’ve known.

then, sometimes (like last year), it warms up for winter

ParticipantYou spoke too soon, it’s like 80 and raining out. I almost biked in between rain gaps, but decided with my luck it would pour and it did pour. At the same time, the amount of time it took to take the bus made me think I would have preferred wet and on time to semi-wet and late.

I was almost successful in waiting for a gap, but I think I pedalled too fast and caught up with the rain. Oops. Legs and feet got soaked in DC, but that’s about it. It wasn’t that bad , especially considering how slowly the traffic was moving on the parkway.

Participantroad traffic completely melted down today. I guess it’s been a while since it’s rained, and people were confused about what that wet stuff was all over the place.

Yeah, the cool spell is supposed to start on Sunday. Some 70s and 80s before then, though.

I was super lucky today (knock on wood I don’t jinx my afternoon commute) and traffic on the inner loop was running smooth. Granted, I go in generally the opposite direction of the main rush, but there are a few spots where the inner loop can back up (Georgia Ave is typical). The traffic moved smoothly this morning because the heavy rain slowed everyone down. It’s amazing how much smoother the traffic runs when people are too scared to be overly aggressive.
I think I’m one of the few who can say my drive around the beltway this morning was somewhat pleasant.

ParticipantLooks like amazing weather this week. Temps in the 70s and sun all week, hopefully right through the weekend.
The forecast for a colder-than-normal October did not seem to pan out. Pretty close to normal weather this month, I’d say, maybe even a little warmer. It has certainly been great riding weather.
At least one of the major computer models has been flirting with the idea of a major rain/wind storm mid next week (Halloween), sort of a combination hurricane and winter storm — we’ll see if that forecast is any better! (Probably not.)

ParticipantI heard the rain/cold was coming in this Saturday sometime, possibly later evening, but they couldn’t be sure until it was closer to the weekend.

ParticipantCould have an amazing tailwind from the NNE on Monday morning. Afternoon commute home might suck.

Seriously, the weather models have been increasingly clustered on a bad storm in the general area next Monday and Tuesday. Enough for me to work out the telecommuting permissions and filling the generator. We’ll see!

ParticipantMy problem isn’t cold weather, it’s getting up when it’s dark out…in the summer, the sun does a pretty good job of waking me up and my alarm is secondary. But in fall/winter, I hit snooze almost unconsciously until about 7am when it finally starts to get light out, and by that time it’s too late for me to ride. Looking forward to moving and cutting my ride in half, as I think that will make a big difference.

People get up after the sun is up? No wonder I never see anyone when I ride into work.

ParticipantCrud, the latest weather models are in more of a consensus that we’ll have really lousy weather next Monday and Tuesday. The European model has been very consistent with a track pretty much over Ocean City and DC and widespread tropical storm force winds and flooding rains. The main U.S. model and the Canadian model now seem like the have the storm hitting NYC area, but still very windy and rainy here on the storm’s back side (so to speak). If the Euro is right, we’ll have power outages and wind and rain damage, and maybe even storm surge in the bay and Potomac if the center goes a little more south. If the U.S model is right, we’ll still have nasty winds and cold windblown rain from the storm to our north.
So, I’m doing everything I can to steer the storm away. The only thing that seems to work is overpreparation. Therefore, I took today off, filled the generator and gas cans, cleaned the gutters, got grill gas, and brought in firewood. That is usually sufficient to keep predicted storms safely out to sea…

I single-handedly prevented the Y2K meltdown by stacking firewood.
(Actually, I never understood the Y2K thing. So what if a bunch of old COBOL programs sent people the wrong bills or corporate reports got fouled up? I never understood the whole sky is falling thing on that one…)
