ParticipantI did it last year but am passing on it this year. Its a fun event. My only tip is to start as early as you can; last year Dirt and I were about 30 minutes after the earliest start time, and we spent the first hour dodging massive groups of slower riders. Its an absolutely massive event. My other advice is to save something for the run back from the coast. We went hard for the first 70, but the last 30 were where the headwinds kicked in, and those headwinds were nasty. I think 2/3 of my energy for the whole event was expended in the last 30 miles.

ParticipantMake sure to eat that pie at the mile-80-something rest stop. It’s goooood.

ParticipantI’m signed up for the first time this year – doing the Assateague route.
Jabberwocky – when you say slower riders, how slow do you mean? We are thinking of starting not too early, but we’re probably more medium-speed…
Megabath – Pie, you say? Hmmm…. now I am seriously intrigued…!
Looking forward to it.

Dirt and I averaged 20 mph on that one, so we were rolling pretty good.

ParticipantI can’t make the Seagull this year but had already signed up. I paid $60 for the registration but would be willing to accept $50. Please PM if interested.

Oh, yes, pie! Warm gooey pie handed to you by the sweetest old ladies in the world.
The first year I did Seagull, it was during a N’oreaster. Those ladies were like Angels. The pie was the fuel that kept me warm in my tummy until the end.
The second time I did Seagull, the pie was so fantastic. We averaged above 20 mph the whole day, so I earned that slab of sweetness. In fact, I have fond memories of that pie. It was the last bit of solid food I had until after the surgery on my arm the next morning after busting it on the entry into the finishing tunnel. Tip: Do not put your arm out to break a fall else you break your arm and wrist and have to be whisked off in an ambulance. The upside – I got morphine instead of beer at the end and a “bionic” arm!

Participantfind a pack of fast riders, and hang off the back for the last 30! The Major Talyor group from NY took good care of us on the way back inland towards pie and ice cream.

Good advice. I did that on my commute last year and then rode the last couple miles to work before deciding the pain was a bit more than my regular ol’ RSI and checking into a hospital. My “upside” was getting to ride metrobus + rail to work for a month afterwards.
I wouldn’t mind doing the Seagull one year but it’s a bit far away so it’s never seriously been on my radar.

ParticipantReading threads like this makes me just want a road bike.

Go test ride one!
I never realized how different the feel of a road bike was until I bought mine.

ParticipantFinally pulled the trigger and signed up for Assateague, hopefully in time for my packet to be mailed to me. I’d estimate >7,000 registered riders at this point. 2nd the recommendations – try to leave early, mind the possibility of squirrly cyclists while the crowd thins out, expect a big crowd at the 1st rest stop, save something for headwinds the last 30 miles, and a rest stop with delightful ladies serving fresh pie rocks! A game I play as I pass (I can dream, can’t I) and get passed by other riders is identifying where they are from based on helmet decorations. I enjoy the sight of bike types you don’t often see and some you never see on the hillier rides in the region – ‘bents, trikes, lots more tandems (heaven to draft), fixies, unicycles (yes, unicycles), maybe some bladers.

Was that 2005? I did it then. If that’s the year you’re talking about, you grossly understate it – the area got was five full inches of rain that day, along with lots of wind gusts. Luckily it was warm tropical rain and wind.

ParticipantThe weather is looking pretty good for tomorrow’s Seagull Century with maybe some rain around 4:00. I’ll be wearing my yellow and brown Dogfish Head jersey and hope to start around 7:30.

ParticipantYesterday’s Seagull Century was great. Perfect weather, except for a nice headwind the last 30 miles. The pie and ice cream at mile 85 were perfect. The only not so fun part was the road into and out of Assateague. The vehicle traffic was heavy and rumble strips along the side of the road made the bicycle riding congested.
