ParticipantSpoke with the construction crew this morning, the section by the skate park is being paved tomorrow, yay! I also thanked them profusely, and let them know how great the trail looks. It’s a trail that doesn’t get a ton of commuter use, but hopefully people will see how great it is and start to use it more.

Hopefully they’ll get it fully paved before hurricane Sandy (maybe) gets near here next week!

ParticipantPretty sure that won’t completely happen. As we’ve seen with the other sections, they seem to have a few different phases for this. Layer of asphalt, wait a few days, another layer of final asphalt, wait a few days, erosion control efforts on the trail sides, wait a few days, paint the lines. So, the first layer of asphalt, at least, will be down tomorrow. That will keep the mud pits from sucking us down to the depths of the Earth’s crust. He also said they’d be paving the south side of the river banks too, though he wasn’t sure where bikes would go since the “trail” will end abruptly on that side. I guess it will just dump on to the sidewalk? Or is there future expansion plans for that side?

ParticipantNE Branch trail was fine this morning. Muddy and sandy in the spots that usually overwash in floods, near the Alt Route 1 bridge and the railroad bridge, and also on the underpass at East-West highway. If you have road tires, need to be alert — that could get slippery when it dries. If you’ve got some tread, it’s not a big deal.
Other than that, just lots of wet leaves and sticks and puddles in the spots that usually have wet leaves and sticks and puddles.

ParticipantI take it back — the sandy section of the NE Branch trail underneath the Alt Route 1 bridge was nasty last night and this morning — it has dried out and loosened up and is very tricky to get through.
Also, the Paint Branch trail had about 5 inches of water by the underpass under the CSX tracks by Lake Artemesia.

ParticipantI won’t get a chance to ride to work until, at the earliest, Tuesday of next week. Hopefully I’ll be able to remember to be careful or maybe things will be better by then. The time change should help.

ParticipantMNCPPC cleared out the sand underneath the Alt Route 1 bridge yesterday afternoon. They also swept leaves and debris in the Lake Artemesia area, including sections of the NE Branch and Paint Branch trails. Kudos! Also, as of last night, the standing water was gone at the CSX track underpass on the Paint Branch trail, and also at little Lake Artemesia (the giant puddle at the north end between the gate and the parking lot).
The only remaining slightly tricky part is under the East-West highway underpass, which still has a bit of sand and dirt that could be slippery.
But basically, the PG trails I ride at least are in great shape, and ready for the weekend.
