I was having shifting trouble in the front derailleur a while back. No amount of fiddling with the barrel adjusters seemed to help. Took it in to the mechanic — 3 of my 6 (I think that’s right) bolts were missing!

Jason, what bb do you have? Square taper? Gxp? I’m surprised your crank arm didn’t work loose if the bolt was so loose.

Greenbelt, I think there are 5 chainring bolts

i don’t have it front of me, but the crank is sugino (sp?). It is not the crank itself, but the spider bolts that were loose.
Same thing happened on my buddy’s bike, Calfee with Dura Ace, he was riding around with two bolts missing for most likely a while.

I’ve done both- on the crank arm I recently destroyed a very expensive and apparently rare Carbon Hollowgram SI spindle and extractor bolt set due to incorrect torque (bike was down for 6 weeks- I had to order parts from Andora Spain!). On the rings themselves I bent a granny ring fully in half after losing a single bolt- two more sheared off.

    Lessons-
    1. As said before- check frequently and if something feels amiss, STOP and check- you’ll cause way more damage from running loose drive train parts!
    2. Properly lube fasteners (or use lock-tite where appropriate)
    3. Have and use a torque wrench (super important for carbon equipment)

There are some 4-bolt cranks out there

Pretty easy to spot. One easy test is the “Bounce Test”. Pick up the bike a few inches off the ground then let go. Verify what rattles (fenders and such normally rattles) then isolate from there. Presta nuts normally rattle once they loosen so tighten accordingly. If you have a saddle bag, that will rattle as well. So isolate the normal things to verify the abnormal.

Yep there are indeed 5 — so I was on 60 percent disconnected!
