UPDATE: I spoke to a Permit Specialist at Cart Baron. She checked first with the Chief Ranger, who thought it would not be allowable to use the parking lot in this way. However, she then spoke to Park Police, who she said are the ones patrolling the lot. She said Park Police told her there is no restriction on how long one parks in the lot, nor on how often on parks there, except that overnight parking is prohibited. She indicated she would relay this back to the Chief Ranger and let me know if he were to disagree. However, she warned that if too many people were to start using the lot for bike commuting, the policy would likely change. So I post this information with some trepidation, but in the spirit of openness. :)

I just began dropping off my kid by car on 16th St, and I am contemplating how I will continue biking to work near the Capitol. (I had been starting my ride from home in Maryland.) One thought is to bring my bike on the car, park in the large lot at Carter Baron/Brightwood Recreation Center/Rock Creek Park Tennis Center, and ride in from there. My car would be sitting at the park essentially business hours, Monday through Friday. Does anyone know whether this is allowed, or who would be best to contact with the question?

The lot is rarely full even on peak weekend days so I don’t see why they would really care too much except during Legg Mason tennis tournament. I do think they close it though at night, but not until much later as some of those courts have lights.
