Nice! I think this is a great improvement.

Looking forward to checking them out.

A long long time ago, Arlington County did a test on multiple bike lane colors (next to W-L high school). Green, blue, and red, iirc. Only took us 10+ years to act on the results!

    Heh.

But seriously, I hope the next location list involves Fairfax Dr. & Wakefield.

I can’t wait to roll on those green lanes, sort of like our version of the red carpet….. without the awards, cameras, tuxedos, celebrities, swag, police escorts, and screaming fans…. OK, so nothing like the red carpet!

Oh, I dunno. I find carrying a superior sense of self-entitlement does an excellent job of recreating the experience all on its own!

I’ve seen a “fake bike lane” at the intersection of Fairfax Dr and Glebe Rd. There are yellow spray painted dashed lines that “connect” the bike lane on either side of the intersection heading eastbound. I follow them as guidelines whenever crossing that intersection, and it seems that vehicles do, too. Perhaps (hopefully) it will be a future green bike lane?

Those bike lanes look creamy. What do they taste like? I’ll let y’all know tomorrow. :D

Do the Freshbikes ride! It goes on those parts of Military, and you get a police escort, as well as occasional screaming.

Really happy to read they keep the same friction as pavement. If I had seen that green “paint” in a bike lane, I would’ve probably gone around it. Paint in the road causes bulges to appear in the seat of my lycra shorts.

I was worried about this too, until I rode in Vancouver, where they have tons of green lanes (I did a write up of it, with lots of pics, here), and I was very happy to learn that don’t really affect the road surface at all. I was kind of expecting it to be more like the paint they use for crosswalks or turn lane markings.

    These are AWESOME!

While I agree that first priority should be places where the bike lanes move in confusing ways. What’s the second priority? Seems like it should be high volume roads — e.g. the rest of Wilson/Clarendon, Fairfax, Lee Hwy (every day I take Lee, I have at least one driver say “Oh, I didn’t see you there” — in the bike lane with plenty of reflective stuff, on beautiful sunny mornings. UGH.

How are the contractors painting the lanes when they come to a T stop intersection? Generally cars are supposed to merge with the bike lane if they are making a right turn so am curious if this will confuse the issue.

Anyway, I’m thrilled the County is moving forward on this. If only there were money to paint all the lanes green……(would probably only cost the equivalent of one military supply plane – just sayin’).

Can they hose down the TR boardwalk with this stuff – just apply liberally, wash, rinse, repeat.

    Some info:

“Cars can still cross the lanes when they have to, such as to enter a right turn lane across a bike lane. The green is intended to reinforce drivers’ awareness of cyclists and of bike lanes, but it doesn’t prohibit normal and lawful maneuvers such as crossing a bike lane or turning from the right-most lane on the road. At this point there are no installations planned at T-intersections (where one road ends at another road) but we may come to that in the future. We’ve not yet decided how we would handle it.

We would also be thrilled to paint every lane in the county green. The coating isn’t cheap though (an understatement). If you like it, tell a board member next time you see them. More public support gives us more money to be able to do things like this.”

Green lanes are wonderful as long as they have the right kind of texture. I’ve been on lanes elsewhere that got slicker than snot in the rain.

Would be interesting to see someone on a sage green Linus bike to contrast the colors.
