I know that during BTW yesterday in Falls Church, a local citizen driver was chewing out a very bike friendly policeman for being too lenient with trail cyclists blasting thru stop signs at the Falls Church intersections. He was upset about the policeman being there offering skills tests and “encouraging” cycling. Although the policeman was very polite to him, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this citizen called the Falls Church police headquarters or other powers that be after he got home to ask again that they crack down.
He was saying that although he drives carefully, there are places where driver visibility for oncoming trail cyclists is low due to greenery, and he has almost hit cyclists a few times when they sped across the road out of nowhere. It was obvious that he was very upset, and there may be some validity to his concerns. I’m fairly certain that was the reason for the ticketing(?) incident eminva mentioned yesterday, although I’m not sure about all the police cars in the Vienna/Reston area. Ride safely out there. Most drivers would much prefer not to hit us.
