jabberwocky
ParticipantI’ve heard that the older ones had a plastic piece inside that would sometimes fail. Any sram dealer outta be able to hook you up. For your ride home, you could at least disconnect the cable from the derailleur and screw the limit screw in to get yourself a more reasonable gear.

ParticipantWhat Jabbs said. From what I’ve heard, SRAM has been very good about replacing/fixing the broken shifters.

ParticipantI’m going to rig something up for the ride home. I called SRAM’s office in Chicago and they were very apologetic. Apparently this is a known problem with that vintage of shifter. It is actually the connection between the paddle and the gear mechanism itself that failed – the paddle fell off while I was trying to fix it. Unfortunately, I have to go to a local bike shop to work out the warranty side of things even though I built up the bike myself from a grupo I bought off of Ebay – oh well. If you see someone panting up Rossyln today – that would be me.

ParticipantRide it! One gear is all you need.
And, depending on the gear, maybe some ibuprofen.March 7, 2012 at 1:30 am #937145pfunkallstar
ParticipantRode the crap out of that thing, I was able to get it up two gears or so, which made it doable – but still rough. I took it over to Bikenetic in Falls Church and they are going to be helping me out with the warranty side of things with SRAM – guy I spoke to couldn’t have been nicer. I was fretting having to bring it over to Revolution or Big Wheel, then I remembered that Bikenetic was around the corner. Hopefully SRAM can ship something out sooner rather than later – I REFUSE TO TAKE METRO WILL RIDE CHILD’S BIKE IF NECESSARY.

ParticipantWhat size are you? Perhaps I could lend you one from my vast fleet. And you would have to about these newfangled shifters not located on the downtube.

ParticipantThanks for the offer – almost took the Huffy Princess bike in this morning – 3 speed YEAH! Anyways, I was able to notch it up yet another gear last night so now I’m rocking the bipedal bispeed, with which I will conquer the newly christened Arlington Biway.

Perhaps bike shops should give out loaner bikes like they do cars at autobody shops. Sounds reasonable to me!

I’m lucky enough to have Capital Bikeshare in my neighborhood and near the bike shop!

It’s a good point when thinking about CaBi expansion — place stations in front of bike shops or even better, car repair shops!

ParticipantWeird. My shifter broke yesterday too. Fortunately I have a triple on the front, so now I have a three speed. SRAM replaced my wife’s broken shifter a few months ago without any hassles and pretty fast. Sent it back through the LBS.
Also, some shops do offer loaner bikes! Just ask.

ParticipantI’ve actually been digging my improv single speed. I took the alternate non-Custis-W&OD route home yesterday and besides some standing to get up the hills it was pretty fun. I’m seriously thinking about building up some sort of 1×10 cross monstrosity.

It really is fun. Consider throwing together a beater fixie and see if it doesn’t suck you in.

ParticipantI once had my freehub lock up while out for a training ride on my geared road bike.
It was an interesting ride home, because it essentially turned the bike into a fixed gear in that I had to keep pedaling if the wheels were moving, but I could change gears like normal depending on the terrain. The weirdest thing was having to continue to lightly pedal while applying the brakes at the same time to come to a stop.

ParticipantI have reasoned out a new build with the following logic – I bike to work everyday and I need another bike – pretty sound. I’ve decided to put together another franken bike with a blend of what I have around the house and a new frame, wheels, and fork. I’m going to build up a “commuter 29er rigid 1×8.” I’ve ordered a Pricepoint-special 29er frame, Vuelta wheels (off brand), and an aluminum rigid fork, and a Truvativ Stylo 1.1 crank. I’m still working out what kind of tires I’m going to put on this thing. I’ll throw on some old Avid disc brakes, an XTR circa 2002 rear derailleur, and call it a day. Can’t wait to ride this thing.
