Can I have my bollards back?

PS. Here is the NOAA climate prediction center’s updated temperature forecast for March. http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/30day/

I think it is a safe bet that we will not have any heavy snow events this March (or this winter), and that all the bollards that were removed for the possibility of slow plowing can now be re-installed for Spring-Summer-Fall.

PS2. I think it’s an even safer bet that even if a freak late season snow fell, it would melt in the warm March sun faster than we could plow it anyway.

PS3. There were cars inadvertently driving in the bike lanes between 6th and 4th streets last night in the dark rain — very hard to see lane markings and the bollards would have been very helpful for the brave cyclists out there.

A car drove in the lane in front of me this morning. Out of state plates, seemed to be looking at a map. He got out fast when he figured it out.

The cars are bad enough when they’re in their own lanes, let alone our lanes too. Tuesday morning, I had my first actual holy crap I almost died incident. Some idiot in Washington Circle decided to cut across 3 lanes, as if I was invisible. Skidding sideways trying to avoid him, i was still close enough to reach out and touch his car. In hind sight, I should have hit him and dented his pretty mercedes.

MCL1981, if you’re contemplating something like that be ready to loudly and steadfastly proclaim your ignorance.

I racked up two citations for property damage a few years back from trying to explain why “they” were wrong and I was right. The citations were voided after I bought a taxi mirror and paid for some bodywork on a Lexus, but restitution AND civil penalties were in play for a while there.

I’m not suggesting following him and attacking the car. But rather than falling over into the road from him hitting me, I would rather fall onto his car so the scrapes are on him. I don’t think I’ll be held responsible for fixing damage to his car when HE HIT ME.

One citation came when I was pinched into a curb by a cab, and instead of taking the hit like a crash dummy I put my hand out. I got caught on the cab’s mirror, which folded away as it’s designed to do. The driver instantly knew that the glass was broken and that the bill would be $250 to get it fixed, and he demanded cash on the spot. It was probably a shakedown in that the driver knew the damage before he inspected it.

He flagged down a motorcycle officer who happened by, and after interviewing both of us the officer cited me but suggested that the cab driver should get it fixed and send me the bill, and that the citation would only be filed if the taxi driver was unsatisfied with my response. After the taxi left the officer turned to me and said “I hate the way taxis are in this city, and I didn’t want to cite you but you admitted moving in a way that caused the damage”. Nothing ever came of it after that, and I saw the same cab a few months later (Sun cab #200) with the same broken mirror.

The other citation was different in that there were witnesses who saw me kick the Lexus’s fender. They were unable to corroborate my explanation that the driver had already run a red light and had nudged me across three lanes over my gestures and protests.

Help me spread these Justin Antos photos around the DDOT people who should be taking care of this? This is just infuriatingly dangerous. (And I’m pretty sure it’s not going to snow anymore this season…)

I forget where i heard DC bragging about 50 some tickets and 60 some warnings given out for u-turns since the law change in January (that’s when it was, right?). Based on observations, and a super-conservative estimate, that’s about four hours of enforcement for the year.

I will be interviewing a number of people involved with the Penn Ave Cycletrack about what is and isn’t happening to fix the cycletrack for Greater Greater Washington in the coming weeks. Hopeful it will provide new insight and background as to what will be done or not done in the future. So look for it in the near future.

Not to pile on, but I’ll add this to the collection. This is at least the third time I’ve seen professional camera crews setting up to shoot an interview in the lanes. The traffic islands really need some kind of painted indicator to show that they’re a lane. I’ve had tourists argue with me that they’re completely in the right to block the whole thing.
