    … WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 3 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO MIDNIGHT EST TONIGHT…

    THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BALTIMORE MD/WASHINGTON HAS ISSUED A WIND ADVISORY… WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 3 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO MIDNIGHT EST TONIGHT.

    * TIMING… THE STRONGEST WINDS WILL BE LATE THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH THIS EVENING.

    * WINDS… SOUTHWEST LATE THIS AFTERNOON 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS UP 55 MPH… BECOMING WEST THIS EVENING.

    PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

    A WIND ADVISORY MEANS THAT WIND GUSTS OVER 45 MPH ARE EXPECTED. WINDS THIS STRONG CAN MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT… ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES. USE EXTRA CAUTION.

    [Forget about driving. 55 mph wind gusts can make CYCLING difficult. And dangerous! Take any necessary precautions.]

    I wussed out and took the metro when I saw this. hoping someone who commutes home today takes some video!

    You’re not alone in opting for the metro today – the bridges can get very interesting in gusts like that.

    I’m not as annoyed about not riding in today as I usually would be, since I was able to take advantage of the nice weather yesterday and almost double my usual commute with a very fun exploratory ride. I love this area!

    I’m only going 5 miles each way today (helping someone move on the way back) and figured I’d just use the heightened wind as an opportunity to obtain more workout per mile.

    Southwesterly wind is a tailwind for our ride home. No pedaling today, I’ll just hoist a sail!

    Not for those heading through Arlington from DC (remember winds are reported as the direction they are coming from not going to).
    Like the Custis Hill isn’t tough enough without 20- 55MPH headwinds!

    Custis is pretty well sheltered from strong SW winds, but be careful on the bridges and the W&OD. I be leaving around 5ish if someone is looking to draft behind me at about 5mph!

    Wind isn’t too terrible downtown right now, but the rain that just started is nasty. I just missed the worst (but now have to pick up the kids in a downpour, forcing me to take the car). Good luck to everyone on the ride home.

    You heading north on the MVT?
    I’m planning on heading out from the Metro Center area between 4:30 and 4:40. Haven’t made up my mind whether to go north or south on the MVT, but either way, I’m also willing to pull a bit if anyone wants to join in. Black fixie, white bullhorns, black backpack with two orange panels on either side of a reflective panel.

    Sissy…… TOTALLY kidding!! I drove today of course.

    Also, you all should probably be aware that the wind may be the least of your worries in the next couple of hours. A tornado watch has creeped up the coast throughout the day and has now been issued for counties south of immediate area and includes basically all of the Carolinas and Virginia. DC would likely be next to get the watch if the conditions permit. That kinda depends on how close the warm front gets to us and how fast the cold front moves through.

    Either way, it would be a good idea to check the radar 30-60 mins before you are supposed to leave for the day. Leaving a little early, or late could make a world of difference in this weather.

    Yeah I’m watching carefully. I could leave anytime from 3pm-4:30pm really, but I’m going to try to time my run. Of course I’ve tried this before and gotten soaking wet only for it to stop raining as soon as I get home.

    Either way I’m pretty sure I’ll be glad to have my triple crank today.

    I’ll be heading out of Rosslyn around 5. Also still haven’t made up my mind about the long route to East Falls Church via the MVT/4MRT/W&OD, or the short route uphill on the Custis. I expect that when I pull out of my parking garage into the Rosslyn wind tunnel, I’ll make my decision. Definitely won’t be wearing the rain cape! ;)

    By the way, what happened to our 70° weather? Seems like it never made it over 55°. 😡

    No tornado watch (yet) for Arlington, Fairfax or Prince William. It looks like the worst of the weather will stay to the south.

    I wonder what it would be like at Hains Point this evening. Imagine riding while leaning over 80 degrees to the side!

    I metro’d today. I was on the fence kinda wanting to get home early. The 40mph headwind made it easy.
