Given that he was conscious, I’m going to assume he was wearing a helmet. The bike is also surprisingly un-mangled. Presuming this was a T-Bone crash at the intersection, it was a fairly low speed collision given the short stopping distance of the bus. I will never understand why someone would ride on the road without a helmet. All you need to do is misjudge one intersection or not see one car and its over.

Local TV news said he was in the hospital with non-life-threatening head injuries.

Unfortunately that could be anything from being watched for a concussion to being alive but spending your life drooling with a bib and a sippy cup. I for one hope he fully recovers.

Don’t underestimate the threat posed by head injuries. My dad fell off a short ladder outside his house and hit the concrete apron with his head. He lost his hearing in one ear and sustained a permanent brain injury.

I don’t have 100% confidence in helmets but figure they provide more protection than not.

Accidents can happen anywhere. I know someone who tripped on a curb (while walking) and broke her jaw and had to be wired shut for months.

    And on that happy note…
