    Hi, I’m new to the board. I live in the Rossyln area of Virginia and am looking to commute by bike to the Veterans Hospital in DC. I had a very bad accident a few years back (car hit me) and am pretty anxious around high traffic areas (Georgia Avenue, M Street etc) so any way to avoid those areas would be appreciated. Willing to add miles on to route to avoid heavily traffic areas if possible. Would be commuting early am weekdays – probably around 5:30 am/6 am and probably return after 5 pm or 6 pm. Probably would begin route going across the Key Bridge.
    Also, are there any places to park/lock bikes at the VA? It doesn’t look like the rental red bikes are there so would probably need to ride my own bike. Thanks.

    I can’t help much around Veterans Hospital but I do avoid M St. if I’m on my way home from DC to Virginia via Key Bridge. I take K St NW (underneath the Whitehurst Fwy) and then go right up the hill of Potomac St, go up the kerb between the bollards (slight left), and cross the first bridge across the canal (steps on the south side – you have to dismount). I then ride up to Big Wheel Bikes and take a left through the alley to 34th St at which point you’re on the east side crossing of Key Bridge. It’s cobble-y and slow going but beats M St. imo and it’s all paved unlike other canal bike options. K St has a lot of stop signs but if you can ride on the south side which has bike trails and avoid those too (although you have to cross K St to get to Potomac St, there’s usually very little traffic since that’s almost the end of K St).

    There are probably better options than this, esp since you’d be coming from NE of M St. I guess I enjoy the cobbles.

    Looks like you’re closest Cabi Station is Georgia Ave and Fairmont St NW which would give you about a 15 minute walk (just under a mile)

    I ride the key bridge and M st in Georgetown every morning between 6 and 7 am and the traffic is MUCH lighter and easy to deal with than the aneurysm inducing afternoon gridlock.

    here’s an option that uses N, P, New Hampshire, 11th and Irving to get you there.

    Here’s another option that uses N, P, Q and 1st st.

    looks like you’ve got an uphill either way heading to work.

    here’s a way home.

    I haven’t ridden either of these routes directly, but I’ve ridden in and around most of the areas at some point.

    I’m sure a lot of other folks will suggest to take a lazy sunday morning and try out the route before you NEED to ride it to get to work.
