You’ve seen them standing around at the trail’s end in Purcellville, hot and tired cyclists listlessly chewing on energy bars and drinking tepid water as they gather their fortitude for the long slog back towards home on the W&OD. [/url]
Only made worse by the fact that it’s all downhill all the way back to Leesburg

ParticipantHey that place looks rather cool; not at all what I’d expect in Purcellville. I presume they are not offended by the great unwashed lycra crowd showing up on their doorstep?

ParticipantWith that beer lineup, I’d need someone to give me a ride home.

ParticipantThe day I was there I saw hikers who asked at the door if they would be welcome. It wasn’t a problem for either of us.

ParticipantThat looks seriously tempting!

ParticipantI usually wait to hit this place in Leesburg personally

ParticipantHmm, so with this and Carolina Bros in Ashburn, a trip up to Purcellville could really add up. I’ve only made it as far as Leesburg once.

So is it good? I’ve had it bookmarked for awhile to try next time I’m in Leesburg. I miss doner (either Australian or UK style – never tried the German style).

ParticipantLooks great! Any nice recommended places to stay out there toward the end of the trail? I can envision taking a weekend trip out with an overnight stay. It looks like maybe 60+ miles from our location — at our pace, best to split the trip up into two days.

ParticipantThere are other tasty dining establishments in Purcellville, such as Mom’s Place, Penn’s Kitchen, etc.
If it is spirits you are interested in, Purcellville also has Catoctin Distillery ( http://catoctincreekdistilling.com/ ).
Leesburg also has Vintage 50 brewery ( http://www.restaurantbreweryloudoun.com/ ).

There’s roughly a 170 foot rise from around Ivandale to Clarke’s Gap. Otherwise, yes.
Noticed a bike commuter this morning climbing Rt 9 on the approach to the Rt 7 bridge using the shoulder instead of the trail. Wasn’t acting as a vehicular cyclist, so not sure why he was making that statement. That stretch of the road can be quite chaotic at rush hour.

ParticipantI’ve been with two different large groups of cyclists at Magnolias on either a Saturday or Sunday and they have been very accommodating so far. We try to get there as soon as they open before they get real busy. Have been seated both inside and on the patio.
Someone in Purcellville recommended the BBQ in Paeonian Springs, but it looks like they don’t serve until mid afternoon.
I also give a thumbs up to the Doner Bistro in Leesburg. If you are not up for the meal, ride around the corner and get a slice of pie , put it in your jersey pocket (it’s in a sealed container
). It’s too bad the Milwaukee Frozen Custard in Leesburg is now closed, that was good on top of the pie slice.
I’ll have to see if I can find their shop in Ashburn, the one in Herndon is about a half mile north on Eldon off the trail.

ParticipantThis thread takes me back to a campaign speech by Loudoun County Supervisor Sharon Volpe last summer, when she expressed skepticism that bicycle tourism helps businesses in the County.

What a dolt she is.

The only reason I’ve even *heard* of Purcellville is because of the WO&D. The only reason I would *visit* Purcellville is because of the WO&D.
No bike, no visit – simple as that.

If I could somehow give money to the businesses there without letting any taxes go to Loudon County itself, I would.

ParticipantThere’s also a farmer’s market in Purcellville 10am – 1pm (http://www.purcellvillecommunitymarket.com/ ), and tends to be really hopping in the Spring, Summer, and Fall.
Another farmer’s market in Leesburg year around about 1/2 mile off the trail, 9am – noon ( http://www.loudounfarmersmarkets.org/Winter.php )
Another in Ashburn from May to October 8am – noon ( http://www.loudounfarmersmarkets.org/Ashburn.php )
