Hello —
I decided to give the Festive 500 a try so I’ve been expanding beyond my usual commuter routes this week. Last Friday, I left work early and rode down to Mount Vernon (from downtown DC). However, I kind of lost the trail in Alexandria. As I approached Old Town, the trail forked and the branch to the left was marked as “River Route.” I wasn’t sure which way to go, so I took the right fork thinking that kept me on the main trail, but almost immediately realized that would have me salmoning down the sidewalk on Washington so I turned around and took the “River Route.” Pretty soon I lost all signage for that, so I just kept ambling in a general southerly direction until I saw a sign for the trail. Right around the beltway crossing, I almost got lost again, but a really helpful pedestrian got me pointed in the right direction. For the return trip, I just stayed on Washington.
How do cyclists usually negotiate Alexandria? Stay on Washington? If so, do you take the lane? I did take the lane right in the most congested area (after buzzing an elderly lady coming out of a church while riding on the sidewalk) and that seemed okay, but I didn’t really want to beyond that 4-6 block area. Traffic seemed a bit fast.
This morning I went to Hains Point for a couple of loops. Right next to the entrance to the golf course, there was a barrier blocking the road indicating the road was closed. I just hopped over the curb and went around the side and continued cycling round the loop. I assumed the barrier was meant to keep out autos only. However, I’m not sure. Does anyone know whether bikes are allowed when the barrier is in place? If not, are there hours when bikes are allowed?
Thanks very much for your input.
Liz (who’s still got 286 km to go . . . darn upper respiratory infection . . . )
