In my spare time, when I’m not eulogizing The WABA Poobah, I have given much thought and consideration to where I plan to spend the upcoming holidays. After suffering through a blizzard and a car that became stuck on a mountain in a dark blinding snowfall last year, I decided a warmer climate for the holidays suited me much better.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered Miami Beach has a bike share program similar to ours. It is called DecoBike http://www.decobike.com/index.php.

In the name of research and the desire to be an accurate reporter, I’ve decided to travel to Miami Beach just to try out their bike share program and report back to members of the Washington Area Bike Forum how it works. To some it may seem like a sacrifice, but to me it’s all about the bikes. 😎

To the rest of my forum friends I’d like to ask them to report back about their biking adventures in other towns, cities, and countries. It’s all in the name of fact-finding and investigative reporting. I wouldn’t dream of lying on the beach covered in SPF sipping some sort of rum concoction…

    Happy Holiday Trails,
    ann

I checked out the website and immediately realized the Miami Beach Bike Forum must have a completely different discussion going on in their “Layering 101” thread.

Seriously, have a great trip. Please report back with photos!

In answer to your last question, I don’t have a lot of experience elsewhere. Our family went mountain biking in southern Arizona about 20 months ago. That was fun, although a little too tough for my son (then nine). The first day he took a dive off the bike and into some type of cactus. That did not set a great tone for the week. However, for more intrepid riders, there is great mountain biking in that area. Tucson is a surprisingly friendly town for vehicular cycling, with bike lanes on all major roads.

I have also ridden in Berlin, Germany, which conforms to the European stereotype and has a lot more cyclists and cycling infrastructure than what we see here. It was a pleasure to be part of that.

I like your idea — will have to look for more opportunities to do “research” in 2012 . . .

    Ann,

You do realize the trip DIDN’T happen unless you post a photo of yourself in a bikini – on a bike of course.

I am seriously considering going to Miami in February so you will definitely have to let us know how the biking is down there. When I was researching the area I discovered that there are quite a few rental outlets that seemed to offer a wide range of bikes in case you decide to do some longer rides. If memory serves me correctly, there are even some bike trails.

Watch out for the alligators!

Oh my. Of course I’d be overjoyed to post pictures like that but I’m sure Tim Kelley, the forum administrator, would never allow such a thing.
