Pete started a fantastic thread about this here: Layers 101 I’m going to add my experiences right now.

See also Pete’s thread on destinkifying synthetic bike clothes. The Penquin sports wash works great.

I added some input on the layers 101 thread. That’s a good place to look for lots of suggestions.

I’d have a much easier time deciding what clothes to wear if only Mother Nature would settle on one temperature! 60 degrees one day then 40 degrees the next, rain maybe. Up, down, up, down.

A note to the ladies: Athleta opened up a store on M Street in Georgetown. Visited the other day and ended up walking out with a few tops. While they don’t cater per se to the cycling crowd, they do have lots of yoga/running/exercise clothing that is more stylish than the usual fare and can be easily worn for cycling. Unfortunately their prices reflect the extra dose of fashion. Lululemon is also located a few doors down.

I just have to give JL Racing another plug here (no, I have no financial interest). But seriously, the tech shirts, though intended for rowing, work very, very well for bike commuting and are not expensive. The shoulders allow for lots of reach and the shirt tail is long to cover your lower back. I wear the coolmax short sleeve tech shirts anywhere between 60-something and whateverthesummerbrings degrees. The long-sleeve coolmax works on its own down to around 50 comfortably and is wonderful under a cycling jacket for anything lower. I suspect the heavier blends work better at lower temps, but I have never needed to test them.

Dirt’s thread is pretty comprehensive – many thanks. Hopefully I’ll be able to piece together a functional getup before Freezing February.
