    That’s what it looks like. It probably is just a counter of some kind.

    Exposure Diablo. That is the lowest setting. Wish it went lower. I believe it is about 180lumen, but the optics are so good that it is too powerful to use on a trail with any traffic coming toward me. Medium setting makes approaching cars flash their brights at me. High setting causes car accidents. It is also small, light weight (under 130 grams), has great run time and no external battery or cable. The helmet and handlebar mounts come with it and are the best I’ve ever used.

    I’ve had mine for almost 3 years. It gets used hundreds of days per year. It has never, ever, ever shown a hint of mortality.

    Other than that, it is perfect. :D Exposure makes smaller, lighter models, as well as larger, more powerful ones. Amazing company. Great customer service too.

    dirt,
    the box on the custis trail has been there for years.
    here is an old post. paul from arlington county commuter services told me it was an old counter, no longer used.
    anyway, stay alert on the trails.

    I figured it was. They did some landscaping work around it and that’s probably why I noticed it last week.

    I’m still bummed that it isn’t a camera. :P

    This is a great deal! If they had this deal when I was looking I would have bought the Diablo. I ended up buying the Joystick that Pete talked me into buying and haven’t looked back. Awesome light.

    I’m looking at the Strada, it has a “low beam,” pointed at the road. I’ve been using an inexpensive Cateye light, which has been basically OK for my purposes when the batteries are charged. It uses AA batteries, and I’ve been using rechargeables in it. The rechargeables don’t give you much warning before they run out of power. I like that the Exposure lights have a built-in battery gauge, in addition to all the extra light.

    Pete, just to confirm — you wish this light had a lower setting? ‘Cuz that’s why I’m looking at the Strada. But the Strada weighs twice as much and costs more.

    I just got the Strada and absolutely love it. The remote dimmer switch is absolutely brillant (just like being in a car); I attach it so that it fits right under my thumb and click away as needed. Yes, the light is very, very bright; I figure if someone tries to mug me at night, I can temporarily blind them by shining the light directly into their eyes. Tried it out at 10:00 pm on the MVT in some of the darkest parts and could see fine. When on high beam, it appears to have one lightbulb pointing down at the ground closer to the bike, the other lightbulb focuses higher up, further away from the bike. When the dimmer is employed, it seems to point both lightbulbs down and does seem to help a lot with not blinding oncoming cyclists. Also, peds really take notice of this light since they kept turning around to see what was coming at them :D The light pops on/off the handlebar assembly very quickly and easily. My biggest concern is forgetting it on the handlebar while I’ve got the bike locked up on the street since it could be very easily stolen that way. This is the iPod of lights if you ask me.

    I’ve only had it a week so can’t comment on the durability yet but right now I’m in heaven. Now I feel confident that I don’t have to hurry home when the sun goes down. It is a little on the heavy side but that’s a small price to pay for safety. I do think 600+ lumens is the way to go. I will probably still get a helmet mounted light though for winter so I can shine a light on scary stuff that is not in my direct line of travel.

    KLizotte, thanks for the information. What you said above is pretty much what I was thinking. My light gets me to and from work on the short fall and winter days, but I’d like to feel I can stay out at night and not rush home. And it seems like a good investment in safety, since it will last for years and can be moved from bike to bike.

    Thank you for the offer to take a look, but I’m in Baltimore so I can’t take you up on it.

    The Strada’s high beam is not as bright as the diablo, but it is plenty bright and it has 3 times the burn time. It is a great light.

    There’s one that is smaller than the Joystick that SQ got. It is called the Spark. That may be something I look into. It is tiny and quite powerful. It also has a lower low beam.

    Following up on this, the sale Dirt called our attention to was a clearance of 2011 models in advance of the arrival of new, presumably improved, 2012 models. I ordered the Strada, and got this email from IBEX sports today:

    Hello, Thank you for the order. I apologize for the delay – we went out of stock on the 2011s and we are waiting for the 2012s to arrive this Friday. We will ship you a 2012 light for the same price on Friday.

    Just sharing my good shopping experience with this company.

    Wow, you got lucky since I tried to get the 2012 just a couple of weeks ago but was out of luck (I did get the sale price though). According to the manufacturer’s website, the 2012 model is a little brighter ;) at 645 lumens.

    Yes, as Dirt pointed out earlier the Diablo is brighter (600 vs 900 luments) but you pay for that in shorter run time. I’m bad about remembering to re-charge so decided to play it safe.

    I think I’ll skip over to their webpage now and see if I can pick up a sale priced helmet light.

    The dark nights will be upon us before we know it!
