ParticipantHi @jlamb. Thank you for sponsoring this pointless prize again. I would say you shouldn’t worry about unclaimed prizes. As practice shows, people mainly play for fun and claim their prizes in a year or two.

ParticipantWhat @Serdar said. I gave out Amazon gift cards last year, so people didn’t even have to show up for happy hour–I could just send the cards virtually. And I still had one of the three people who won first try to turn it down and then give it to someone else. Another told me I didn’t have to bother with the prize (although I did end up giving it to him anyway).

ParticipantThanks @serdar and @cvcalhoun. The prizes were intentionally bad. I didn’t really think anyone would want them. Just something to lighten up the competition. I’m still trying to figure out an ironic prize for this year that no one will claim 🙂

ParticipantIronic? How about a derailleur? 😂 To spice it up, it can be broken. 😂

ParticipantBehold the glory of the singlespeed prize.

ParticipantThank you for sponsoring a single-speed competition! The prize is the joy of riding a ssinglesspeed because the journey IS the destination

ParticipantI can offer a broken derailleur as the reward, with the added imprimatur that when it broke I converted my bike in the field to a single speed bike which was functional for over a mile, back to a point with car access. Furthermore, that experience enabled me to convert someone else’s bike to a single speed, again in the field, and I later heard he rode that bike successfully for the remaining 130 miles of his C&O Towpath ride!

ParticipantIt’s been a great start to the singlespeed competition. Currently, Pete is in the lead with over 177 miles. I’ve been trying to catch him, but can’t quite do it. And I believe Pete rides a fixed gear-very impressive. I like to coast downhill, so fixed isn’t for me.
Keep up the good work everyone!

ParticipantHi there! I tagged my last 3 activities with #singlespeed but am not showing up on the leaderboard (don’t worry, I’d only be in, I think, 7th place). Does my profile have to be public for it to work (it’s private but I’m a member of my team and the general freezing saddles group). Something else I’m doing wrong? Thanks!

ParticipantI’m almost there. I snapped the rear derailleur braze-on on my recumbent bike. It’s down to three speeds now.

Participant@Pete Kiehart, your profile does not need to be public but you need to click Log In on freezingsaddles.org and permit the site to read both your public and private rides. Eventually things will sync.

ParticipantSorry, I’m hopeless when it comes to tech support, but Merlin’s suggestion sounds good to me. If that doesn’t work, I think that Serdar is the grandmaster of pointless prizes. He may be able to help.
In other news, I broke the square taper bottom bracket on my singlespeed. Took it to the shop, and the mechanic says he’s never seen that happen in his 17 years of experience. So yay me, I guess.

ParticipantThanks Merlin et al! Just logged in and did that, hopefully it will pop up soon!

ParticipantHey! Super stoked to be competing in the singlespeed pointless prize. I was wondering if my miles are showing up? I think I’ve been doing it correctly (just putting “#singlespeed” in my ride comments)
I previously didn’t know how to check the singlespeed board. Seems like I’m not on it? Not sure what I’ve been messing up.
update: it seems I didn’t know the tag had to be in the title instead of the ride comments. I’ll try to go back and add it.

ParticipantCongratulations to Livingstone Bond for winning the singlespeed competition! And thanks to everyone who participated this year. Whether you rode few or many miles without the assistance of a derailleur, it was a glorious achievement. A beautiful certificate of achievement will be distributed at the closing happy hour to the winner (see photo above).
