    From somewhere on the forum:

When do I find out what team I’m on?

Teams announcements occur at the Welcoming Happy Hour on January 10th. Preliminary information for happy hour can be found on the Washington Area Bike Forum at http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showth…-SAVE-THE-DATE! More information will be posted later on the forum.

I love that BAFS both begins and ends with ill-advised late night laps at Hains Point.

is hains point officially closed at that time or just…ill-advised in general?

Hardly any fancy bike wear for me. I’m not a clipper-inner!

I hiked a lot before I biked a lot. Also, I bike to commute and for other transportation, mostly, with only a few longer rides (over 10 miles).
    So.
    30-40’s –
    — running shoes or low hiking shoes, Darn Tough wool (smart wool?) socks
    — fitted jean or tights (I recently bought stretchy jeans and they’ve been great, even today, for shorter rights).
    — if windy, I add my rain hiking pants – they make it warm/sweaty on the inside, but keep out the wind. Marmot precip I think. On the expensive side, but I don’t think as much as bike wear. They double as my rain gear.

Still trying to figure out when/how to wear bike shorts (for padding on longer rides) under winter gear. Ladies on the Women & Bicycles FB page helped with that, so I’m trying different combos.

    — non-cotton top, fleece shell, hiking rain jacket ($40 or $50) or cycling windbreaker
    — balaclava
    — warn biking gloves

If it’s colder, I add a wool zip up top under all that. And hiking boots. Thanks Komorebi for the suggestion!
They keep my toes warm and generally dry!

I’m not concerned about aerodynamics, just staying warm and dry!

I have learned that for short rides (commutes), I’d rather be underdressed than overdressed – now that my commute is only 25 mins.

I did buy Bar Mitts last year, anticipating more cold, but the couple of times I used them, they were too warm. I think if it’s 25 or under they may come in handy.

Oh, and I have my 10 year old ski goggles handy, in case is really gets nasty out there this winter!

Since I am opting out of FS2018, someone else will need to take on the task of organizing the Pointless Prizes.

I will, though, administer and adjudicate the photo caption game from the sidelines.

Oh that’s a bummer for the rest of us. we hope.to see you at coffee clubs/rides /social events in the winter anyhow

    Good seeing lots of y’all!

So who actually did 100 miles today? How about 100 miles just at Hains Point? What is that, 33 laps?

I managed 3 before I got dizzy. Mad props to Judd for being able to do 300 laps in one sitting without getting nauseous ;)

So…roller blader in bike lane (R Street). Legal? Recommended? I think not.

also… I’m gonna keep saying we need to obey traffic laws. Like stopping at stop signs. Sorry, but if we want respect from cars and peds, we need to be predictable and lawful, and that means stopping at stop signs just like they (usually) do.

many of you were not part of this recent discussion I started on the Women & Bicycles group on FB, but many argued that stopping at stop signs really cramps their style , slows them down, is unsafe sometimes — that’s the very rare exception — and (I can’t help but laugh) equated it to a car putting the car in park, unbuckling the seat belt and getting out of the car!
    thoughts?

other than that , a lovely ride in.

    Where’s everyone else at?

I’m going to try to start extra extra early this year so that I can spend more time drinking coffee and socializing at the pit stop.

Yes, yes, I’ll register and be there.
As long as my friends help me stay away from speedy /scary groups riding around HP. I think last year I did one lap, or two, and still encountered scary fast groups passing me way too closely on the left.

But i’ll come to support W&B, get prizes, see friends, drink coffee, eat pie, and ride my bike!

I do not know his identity, but I am 98% sure that is the same guy (pretty unique bike set up) that passed me on the trail near Commonwealth Blvd without calling his pass. He then immediately slowed down in front of me after we both turned onto Commonwealth, so I rang my bell and passed him back. He then got upset, passed me again and SPIT ON ME. 😡

I really REALLY channeled my inner Dirt that day and luckily, I turned off on Glebe while he kept on Commonwealth.

unf*ing believable!! hooray for channeling your inner Dirt!!

the perspective of someone who almost never ride her bike ..until May 2016:

encourage us to ride in cold temps/winter by (incentives for me): extra points for my team, bragging rights, meeting new people, coffee, food, beer, new routes..

don’t make it so difficult to understand the rules that you drive me/ us away!
