Yeah, I should have clarified that the rollers wasn’t really a recommendation for the broken collarbone :) I figured that for myself it’d make me embrace it more if I made it a little more engaging. But yes, definitely check CL; people sell trainers all the time.

Hah. I wasn’t trying to comment on your post. I didn’t actually notice that you had mentioned rollers. I was just saying it becasue I used to have some and thought they were pretty fun. But not as fun as riding outside, so I got rid of them when they got too dusty.

Rollers are really fun, but I imagine with a hurt collar bone that might not be the best suggestion.

My only suggestion is to look for a used one if he wants one. It seems to me like trainers are the kind of thing that lots of people think they will like/use, end up hating it or not using it, and sell them at a pretty good discount.

Honestly, it’s not that complicated and doesn’t require a new wardrobe. Just gently roll your pants, shirt, (vest), undershirt, socks, tie, and shorts (optional if you have a predilection for blue face paint). Turn your suit coat inside out and roll it separately, put the whole schmeer into something water-resistant, and then try not to mash it in your backpack/saddlebag/whatever. Moving to French cuff shirts without pockets does help. After all, you need the cuffs and collar to remain presentable when you’ve got the jacket on.

Shoes, belts, and overcoats stay at work.

This is the exact post I would have written. Gently rolling pants and shirts, is the way to go, and suit coats inside out was always my grandpa’s way, and he owned a clothing store, so I trust him. I do shower at work, and so I hang them back up while showering, but don’t need to. I tend to leave my dress pants at work for a number of wears, and button ups for two before bringing them home to wash and iron (yep).

    Segways are an abomination.

The meter maids and tourists in the District on them are a menace.

My sister-in-law is only 18, and last year she came to visit my wife and I. Wife was at work one day and I was off, so I took her on a Segway tour. It was the most fun I’ve ever had being a tourist. Honestly, if you ride one, you would probably love it immediately.

I think the problem is that most people on Segways are tourists, and most tourists are idiots, so people think that Segway riders must be idiots. But I assure you, Segways are actually awesome.

Had a sighting of a prestigious Bike Arlington vest wearing rider – I think might be Steve? – we rode across the Douglass bridge and into to the Firth Sterling (aka Navy) gate entrance to Joint Base Anacostia Bolling at the same time this morning. We exchanged a few appreciative words about the gift of this morning’s weather before heading off to our respective buildings on the Base. Meant to give props for the BA vest, but I got caught up in the putting away of the ID – next time.

Nice to meet you! When you slowed down after the turn, I thought maybe that was just your building or I would have waited to chat. I just bought a Disc Trucker as well, so I was eager to discuss. I’m sure I’ll see around base.

    1) Some people just use bikes because they’re the best way to get from Point A to Point B. Using an ebike for that isn’t cheating.

When confronted with stairs and an escalator, I almost always choose the escalator. Seems like an ebike is about the same sensible choice.

No commute again this morning, just driving in and out of the fog between Chillicothe and Cincinnati. It was worth it, rode the Little Miami Scenic Trail from Loveland to just past Morrow (and back). Lots of people out at mid-morning.

I am from Loveland! Glad you were able to enjoy our trail!

Spotted Vicegrip riding thru some gravel to get onto the W&OD. I don’t think we’ve met but I remembered the bike/kit from on here. Took me a few seconds or I would have hollered.

I thought Northside Social was great. I thought Circa was ok at first, and then got just too crowded to be inside. Westover always makes me happy. I’d be curious how somewhere like Lyon Hall or Rustico Ballston would be, if you could get reserved outdoor space.

Cap City is great, especially in terms of how much room they give us. They seem to be extremely accomodating (thanks in no small way to Kathy, I’m sure).

I am not a CaBi member and had lots of anxiety about this when getting to a station with my wife and only two bikes left. For two people to use the kiosk, it takes a few minutes, and I was very worried that a key haver would come take one of them.

I think if people are clearly lined up trying to use the kiosk, then you have to let them have the bikes. It’s just common decency.

I just hope if they do it that they call it the WTF.

Agree with TwoWheels that unlike some other sports where size/strength/speed differences are more apparent, the difference in cycling (marginal speed) really isn’t something you can see while watching it on TV. You almost never know how fast they are going, and whether it be men or women, they are going quite a bit faster than I ever could. All you have to do it watch the Olympics or watching Wellington blow by people in Kona like they are standing still to know that it’d be fun to watch.

But doesn’t Wolf Trap have a BYOB policy? I can’t be trusted to pilot anything after a concert with that. :D

A little bit of a side point, I noticed that the Paris Velib has two year long subscription choices, one for 30 minutes free and one for 45. I wonder if CaBi will ever do the same. It seems like it’d be a hit, especially as CaBi expands to slightly farther reaching locations. Even just from somewhere like Ballston, those extra 15 minutes would increase the number of CaBi stations that I could reach by quite a bit. For $10 more a year or so, I think most would go for the premium subscription.

Totally agree with KLizotte. Daisy-chaining doesn’t really exist. You can’t just ride by a docking station and get 30 more minutes. What you do is check the bike back in, and then check it out. When you check a bike in, you get in line. Often, there isn’t a line because there are ample bikes, but if there is a line, then you get in it.
