ParticipantPondering the bike map…My detour of choice- Coming eastbound on the W&OD, right turn at Little Falls St. If I wanted to say hi to the Bikenetic crew, and take my chances with two blocks of N Washington St, taking the lane to N Westmoreland, then I would turn left at W Jefferson. If I needed the light, and didn’t mind the extra distance, then turn left at W Columbia. Both N Westmoreland and E Columbia connect with N Van Buren St, which connects to the Banneker section of the W&OD.
A caution- the neighbors on N Van Buren St are hypersensitive about cyclists blowing stop signs. We need to behave.

The plan isn’t worth the paper/electrons it is printed on until ACPD improves enforcement against illegal driving that threatens vulnerable road users.
Today’s fatality in DC gives this even more resonance. https://dcist.com/story/19/04/19/cyclist-killed-by-driver-of-stolen-van-on-florida-avenue-in-northeast/

Sadly the cyclist was Dave Salovesh who many of us know very well.
I have no words. This is horrible.
And I have a bike ride to lead in the morning. Feeling very vulnerable…

I went down Columbia Pike this morning and it looks like the rush hour lights to the 27 ramp are now permanent signs and the right lane must exit onto 27. The road has been re-marked and the confusing stripes are gone.
Since there is only one lane through, there is no reason to maintain 2 lanes eastbound past Queen St; though there wasn’t a need before either. In the interim, a pop-up cycle track could be installed from Queen to Joyce or better down to the Pentagon entrance.
This was the modification that HAD TO HAPPEN. Way overdue. Overall a little safer, but still a very hazardous place to ride, period.
If we petition to make the “ANC” section of the Pike single lane with bike lane, will we be crossing swords with the Army’s plans, which seem to be locked in to “4 lanes the whole way”?

I am pleased as punch about the new SB bike lane on 7th Street SW, from Eye Street to Maine. I had heard years ago that something like this was coming with the new development (the building at the corner of 7th and Eye, not the Wharf) but when that building was finished and I saw only a sharrows NB on 7th, I guessed DDOT had given up. The new lane is actually striped (with dashes) through the 7th and Eye intersection from the Eye Street WB lane, which is not a treatment I recall seeing around here. It was always an awkward semi-vehicular left, and one of the pain points remaining on my commute.
And a little bird tells me that a NB lane will be appearing soon on the same block.
“Pleased as punch”? You must remember Hubert Humphrey…

A reminder of the “It’s not about the cherry blossoms” ride you led to perfection last year.

Participantjrenaut- Am so sorry you wrecked. Were it me, I would be most frightened for the *most precious cargo on earth* riding with you. Wishing her quick healing with NO long term damage to her teeth. And hopefully for you, a shorter than the norm recovery.

Ok, that was pretty fun. Rolled out there and followed the lead car, in front of the lead runners, and had pretty minimal responsibilities. Came in at about 2:08, so a pretty respectable time had I been on foot. Weather was perfect. I’m going to try and do it again next year.
Just curious- what responsibilities would you have had in case something happened? I know they didn’t put you out there to cruise…

The trail was still intact and even had been brined past the detour signs about 5:45 pm. I went through as usual along with FFG.
When I went by Sunday, signs were up, areas were taped off for equipment, but still open. I gather that’s still the case. They *should* get rolling on this repair *soon*. Erosion is already undermining the trail bed in one spot. And today’s weather might make matters worse.
