ParticipantA Troll…
“Troll” is an inadequate term to cover all the kinds of misbehavior it’s used to describe. However, since it’s used by a great many people who don’t register fine distinctions between trollish types, it’s likely to go on being used to describe all of them.
A Troll Is:
One who can’t understand that it’s his manners/behavior/language that get him into trouble, rather than his opinions.
A person who encounters a lively conversation on an interesting subject, and can’t think of anything more interesting to do with it than screw it up.
Someone who disrupts a thread so thoroughly that even inattentive users notice.
Someone who disrupts a thread so repeatedly that even the most easygoing users no longer believe it was done in innocence.
One who wants more attention, respect, power, sympathy, etc., than his or her natural gifts and accomplishments would normally bring — so far, that describes just about everyone — and who addresses this disparity by trying to gain those things via less acceptable means, often involving repetitive “scripted” behavior.
A Hardcore Troll Is:
Someone with an excessive, even obsessive focus on a particular interpersonal transaction, who tries to force, provoke, suborn, or otherwise manipulate forums and comment threads into enacting that transaction.
People who are literally incapable of distinguishing rhetorical form and style from content. They experience their own opinions as something like a cross between a reification and a state of being, and they have an abnormal degree of self-identification with their opinions like like the one hoarders have with their possessions. They do not discuss their opinions; they possess, inhabit, and enact them, and will defend them as though they were defending their own body parts. What’s odder still is that these opinions appear to all be second-hand; they are often oddly assorted; and they’re never particularly transgressive or otherwise remarkable. I believe this variety of trollishness is an organically (neurochemically?) based cognitive impairment that may have been around for a long time, but wasn’t noticed until the internet came along.

ParticipantI am a vegetarian. I think all people who eat dead birds are evil. Every time I have a drink with y’all I am secretly despising you. Only those people who enjoy tofurky for Thanksgiving are righteous. (But Vegans…. Vegans are just crazy).

ParticipantYeah, I have carried a first aid kit, but I am not sure what to put in it. Gauze, antiseptic, and tape makes sense.
One thing – I downloaded a red cross first aid app to my itouch. You can also download a bike repair app but I am not sure how good they are.
One thing not mentioned is a “boot” I believe it is called. This is basically a tire (not a tube) patch – say in case of a puncture. Doesnt weigh much.
+1 for a plastic bag. Doesnt weigh anything; and can save electronics if you get caught in a thunder boomer.
I also recommend a camera. A camera built into a phone is just fine. If you get into an accident, take lots of pictures. If you claim you rode a century out the W&OD, take lots of pictures – we demand proof (and wanna see the fun)!

ParticipantThink of it this way. The first cyclists that passes a touron, they are going to respond like tourons. The second cyclist, it might occur to them that there is a pattern here. And if three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in to Alice’s Restaurant and signalling their passes! They may think it’s an organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day, I said fifty people a day walking in to Alice’s Restaurant and signalling their passes. And friends they may thinks it’s a movement.
Seriously. They may react like idiots to you – but by the third cyclists you may have saved an accident.
I have cleaned up after one of those tourists accidents. Lots of blood and a bent frame on a bicyclists who took a dive in order to evade a tourist who stepped left on the trail down near the cemetery.
Call often; call early – or like Dirt, just sing.

ParticipantLocal Team Standings…. based on their national scores (you have to look at the National Screen in order to see all the local riders – otherwise NBC in its infinite wisdom splits the city into VA, MD and probably some more – and your LOCAL screen will only show riders from that jurisdiction). I know I am probably missing some teams.
NB: Team Federal Cyclists Commission is trouncing Team AT&T 😎

ParticipantAnother accident involving the bollards at the MVT Bridge over the GW Parkway at Roosevelt this morning. It appears that a young woman (who was wearing flip flops) failed to navigate the descent down from the Custis Trail to the bridge over the GW. There were about 5 cyclists stopped trying to help her. She looked okay – I did not see blood. But the conversation going on was whether she would walk (not ride) out of there.
That little hill is a beast – and the bollard dead square in the center of the trail doesnt help – there is absolutely no way a car is going to reach that point on the trail.

ParticipantAgreed. I never get negative reactions from the bell. Frequently get positive reactions.
As said before, A big key is – ring the bell further back. If you are ringing it within 10 feet – yip, you are going to startle people. Try ringing your bell – or calling your pass – 50 feet back. That gives you plenty of time to take evasive action if you get a squirrel response.
Bell Good.

Participantsadly, I’ll be replacing those in 3 years to get the be eligible for the insurance.
You might want to do a bit more research. I am not sure…. but at least ask this question. Isnt your bicycle covered under either your homeowners or your rental insurance policy? Alternatively, if you bike is worth enough that you care about insurance, ask your insurance agent about coverage.
If you care about insurance, its probably better to directly insure rather than indirectly rely on a marketing program.

ParticipantArlington Dep Environ Services says they are sending someone out to look at this.
Arlington Dept Environ Services is on twitter as @arlingtondes and they do respond.

ParticipantIf you have free time on your hand, influence people whose opinion matter. ARLNOW comments is a troll tank. Instead, contact the county board; write your member of Congress; write a letter to the editor; start a blog or contribute to a blog; review a NPS EIS….. whatever. But dont feed the trolls.
