I slowed last week to allow pedestrians to cross legally in a crosswalk in DC. A cyclist behind me started ringing his bell and charged through them. I did, in fact, catch up with him and told him how stupid that was.

One time stopped like that once, I was hit from behind by another cyclist (and not someone who was drafting off me). No one was hurt, and the guy was apologetic, but still . . .

In stores, it’s $77.40, and Vienna location has at least 2 as of yesterday. They also have a more expensive one not listed online that has three legs like this one, it costs $132. I paid $129 for it 2 years ago. They have 3 left as of yesterday, one of which is on display without a box.

The last time I was at the Springfield store, they were giving an additional 10% off to anyone that asked.

The article is a little confusing, but I read it as indicating that Performance will try to keep most of its stores open. So maybe they will recover, or maybe they will die a slow death like Sears, I’ve found the persons who work therer to be generally fairly nice, although I stopped getting repair done there because of the wait.

Any updates on when the actual bridge crossing is closing? It was supposed to be closed for the week of Oct 07, but it has still been open for crossing this week. I rode across it at 8:30 am this morning (Wed Oct 10). NPS hasn’t posted any updated closure dates during which the Memorial Bridge will have to be used. Has anyone found updates?

They closed for the part of the day Tuesday or yesterday, maybe a little after 8 am, and it was open in the evening. Hopefully, they are only doing limited closings, as one other poster indicated.

If you’ve had for under a year, you may be able to return it to the store if you bought it locally.

I recently purchased a Surly Pacer steel road bike from a private seller and the stem is too high– currently sitting on 5 cm of spacers (image attached). Not to mention it looks pretty goofy in my opinion. How much would an LBS in the NoVA area charge to cut the steering tube and lower the stem? Also, would they know how to properly fit me to the stem height based on my height and reach?

The previous owner was a bit taller than me and the frame was too small for him, so I believe this is how they compensated. The frame is the right size for me and I doubt much adjustment is needed for the stem; if any. However, I’m still pretty new to road biking, so I’m unfamiliar with how the proper fit feels. Thanks in advance for any advice!

You can also go someplace like Velocity to cut it and make a small donation. I agree with anomad you should lower the stem and put a few of the spacers above it to see how you like the position because once you cut the steerer tube, you are stuck with the results.

High Life Low Life is back. 10 am Sunday, Sept 17, first bridge after Gravelly Point heading south. Lots of glass. Miller High Life label w/broken glass still sticking to it right in the middle. All other bridges and underpasses were clean.

I saw a park police officer photographing some of the broken glass on that bridge this morning. Not sure what they will do with the information, but at least they seem to be documenting the problem to some degree.

On the offhand chance you are serious, the SMARTOMI Portable Speaker got a good write-up on some cycling web sites. It is posted on https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01LZY29S8/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I1OHSRZKYFRKGN&colid=3VUJ0VMXOSM7I but not currently available. Hopefully, I can draft off you some day when you playing some offensive punk tunes.

In all fairness, the suggestion that people should at least look to see if someone needs help, is reasonable, and I guess most people on this forum can tell when someone needs help and when someone is just chilling. However, asking it does not seem like the type of behavior to get upset about.

What you need to do is take your smartphone along for your rides (or if you don’t have one, or prefer not to, then a small object that looks like a smartphone from a distance). Pull it out of your bag immediately after you stop, and (at least pretend to) fiddle with it until you are ready to go again. You can even pretend to have a conversation (being of the generation who still uses such devices thusly). No one will ever bother you again.

Or maybe use some sort of flag.

I keep my suit jackets and shoes, in a closet in my office, and carry a fresh shirt, tie and socks (and lunch) each day in a backpack. I also keep a spare tie and socks in a drawer in my office, given my amazing ability to forget things.

Prince William Forest is an often-overlooked “oasis” just off of I-95 in Triangle, VA. It has the usual national park amenities–camping, cabins, hiking trails, organized hikes, ranger talks, and…biking. According to the park website:

For the on- and off-road cyclist, Prince William Forest Park is a favorite place for bicyclists. Over twelve miles of paved roads and 9.2 miles of gravel roads are available.

Three miles of the park Scenic Drive are a dedicated bike lane providing a paved, relatively flat surface ideal for beginning bicyclists. More experienced cyclists with mountain bikes have the option of off-road biking on any of the ten fire roads in the park.

Scenic Drive is primarily a big loop, most of which is pretty hilly – nothing too long, but steep climbs. It is good if you want to work on your climbing skills, and a blast if you like a fast descent.
