This LFL had only adult books so I left “He Bear, She Bear” by Stan and Jan Bernstein.

I like that you’re showing up “prebeared” … or is it that your pannier is “loaded for bear?”

I love the mural culture here. Even the ordinary turns into something wondrous. I had sun angle problems with these photos – thus the angle.

Saw it in the paper this morning so rode down to check it out. This is normally where El Paso has its “LOVE” letters.

When I was in high school I wrote a research paper on Galileo’s life and troubles with the Inquisition. I gave it the title, Eppur Si Muove, which he supposedly uttered quietly after submitting to the dictates of the Church at the time. Researching for the paper taught me that sometimes one has to concede a battle in order to continue to fight the war. He never gave up his ideas or ideals and some say he never gave up his sorrow over how his own church refused to see truth.
So in spirit of Galileo’s struggles, I give you St. Stephen & Deacon Martyr Catholic Church.

ParticipantDon’t know if this qualifies for Black History Month. Many of the laborers helped here (Las American Immigrant Advocacy Center) are Afro-Mexican-American-x. I think this mural represents the ambiguity of origin that has such a huge impact on how people are often treated historically and now.

If it doesn’t qualify, that’s okay – it’s still a great mural that I enjoy sharing.
My first ride today had this publicart to delight the eye:

My second ride today had a plethora of pieces to choose from under the freeway but now I know where to go back for more, so for today, this is the submission:

There’s a lot of art here in El Paso that is inspired by Aztec works. This park under the freeway is officially named Lincoln Park, but it has been renamed by the primary users from the neighborhood Chicano Park, and the artwork reflects their pride and frustration. As far as I can tell, this work has not been documented or commissioned by the ‘official’ art community here. I think it makes it all the more valuable – but was a bit tricky to find a route to get there and I wasn’t sure what all I would find. I had seen some of it while riding in a car on the freeway and wanted to go back to REALLY look.
I was delighted when I saw this female figure, with the water jugs at the top and the waterfall behind her. I knew I’d found my Aquarius.

Memorial to the WWI Dead of El Paso. It’s in a nice little triangle park in the downtown area.

Replenished this LFL on Duke Street in Alexandria. This is the LFL that Serdar found last month without any books. It didn’t have any books today either. Karen and I rode in from Vienna to bring a few books for the now, no longer empty library shelves.

This is the LFL that Serdar found last month that was EMPTY! I’m planning to lead a LFL replenishment ride within the next several weeks so did a scouting ride today. Cathy Miller and another non-FS friend joined me and we left a few books as it was still empty. The couple who own the pest control business where the LFL is located arrived while we were photo-documenting. We explained that we’re planning to bring some friends with more books which they appreciated. This is not an official chartered LFL but I told them about the website and the ability to get it chartered. Not sure whether they will follow through on that.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

LFL located in Dogwood Park, 800 Monroe Street, was built by the Rockville Baseball Association but had no books about baseball or sports. It had plenty of kids books but I donated one anyway.

ParticipantI thought for sure this was a daycare entrance but when I got there, I found a Pediatric Dental practice!
I do struggle with these “art” installations that are clearly commercial. Do they violate the spirit of public ART finder? I’ll leave it to Boomer to decide.

There were, of course, many Planet Fitness signs around, but I wanted something more obscure. Right after I saw “10th Planet Jiu Jitsu” I went around the corner and found this, completely unexpected. Aren’t those the best finds?

This LFL appears to be very new and is in excellent shape. All of the books were for adults so I left Space Kid. The LFL was loosely organized by non-fiction on the lower shelf, and fiction on the top. Just as I was leaving a group of high school students came along and one of them swapped out a book he’d brought for one in the LFL.Actually seeing a LFL in use and by high school students — DING DING DING — extra points!
