karenbikes2@gmail.comParticipantHere’s another relatively new public art installation in Reston. It’s located in a new condo development between Sunrise Valley Rd and the toll road. The piece is titled “Simon,” referring to Reston’s founder, Robert Simon. The sculptor is DeWitt Godfrey. More about this piece and the artist: https://publicartreston.org/project/simon2/

This place gets rave reviews on Yelp which means it must be pretty good since it’s really hidden away at the back of a condo building on Sunrise Valley Rd near the intersection with Reston Pkwy.

If you zoom in to see the detail in the plaque, you’ll see that this bench is dedicated to Phil Calkins, a hand cyclist. I used to see him on the W&OD in the Vienna area all the time and didn’t know until today when I discovered this memorial bench that he’d died. Phil spent his life advocating for disability rights. He served on the Congressional Task Force on the Rights and Empowerment of Americans with Disabilities where he collected and analyzed data on discrimination against the disabled. This evidence was used to help raise public awareness about the need for legal protections for people with disabilities (in advance of the passage of the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act).

This LFL had adult books on the upper level, and mostly children’s books on the lower level. I deposited Mercer Meyer’s “What a Bad Dream” and borrowed “The Snow Child” by Eowyn Ivey, a Pulitzer Prize finalist.

karenbikes2@gmail.comParticipantDaniel Serrano was a 16 year old boy who lived around the block from my house. He died in a hit and run when crossing the street on 12/29/18. They never did find the person who ran him down. This is a memorial that his friends constructed for him at the scene of the accident. It was a little disheveled so I straightened it up.

This charming library has a wonderful collection of kids books. Some looked brand new.
Also a handful of adult books and some flash cards. Inside lights illuminate the selections.

2/22/22 favorite free library so far! Not an LFL but shaped like a MUSHROOM complete with stained glass windows and firefly lights and books for all ages. Corner of Washington Blvd and N Evergreen St. (Really resent the development there that killed so many trees but this library is a sweet outcome). I took three pics to share the fun details.
