Participant#2 kills me, for I just picked up a sweet fluid cyclops. It calls me every morning like a warm siren trapped in the basement.
BUT
I will be strong and resist, for I will play in this year’s Freezing Saddles Reindeer Games!!!!!!November 15, 2013 at 10:15 am in reply to: Uninvited dude drafting me, silently, in the dark…with attitude! #985978Jason B
ParticipantPeople drafting me I am ok with, actually I am surprised when people are going as slow as me, but overlapped tires is weird, and dangerous.
(I can assume there were not five other commuters with you riding an echelon up Custis)
I usually avoid conversations with other riders, so I probably would pull a quick fake glove adjustment at the next stop to allow him to pass. If he doesn’t pass, I guess give him your number or show him your ring, because it is that weird.Jason B

Yeah, I agree with dcv. I ride it on my cross bike with 700×32 tires (tubeless helps avoid pinch flats). It certainly is faster / more care-free on my single speed 29er (especially some of the more technical new trails in Lake Fairfax), but there is nothing better than riding single track on the way to work — and the mtb would really make a slog of the other 14 miles.
Ok, buddy and I did a portion of the CCT out near Great falls for the first time, about 25 miles total. It was a great run, but I would have to say, the mountain bike made it a blast. Although I can see it being faster on a cross, picking your lines, the mtb allowed me to say, “f’ the lines” and just crank with little thought. My mtb is an old classic beater, and it beat on some trails. I am definitely doing that again.
Thanks for posting that ride and advice!Jason B
ParticipantTwo speeds this morning, 43.7 or 8.5, depending on which direction. Man, that was windy

Sounds like a great ride. If you can, post the strava. Although that general store has a wonderful charm and delicious little ham sandwiches, it usually means a hellish climb up Mt Weather.Jason B

Thanks fellas, I will definitely be adding these to the mix.Jason B

It was my evening commute that reminded me how much I love my normal commute on the MVT and Custis. Today, I needed to go to South Arlington – Walter Reed/Columbia Pike area from the 14th St bridge. On Google maps, it looked simple. In the pitch dark, it was a bit creepy going under the GW Parkway, trying to find the deserted path through some sort of park to the little bridge leading to the Pentagon. Would have helped to have seen it once in the daylight. Or have some much bigger light than I have. Then on some sort of sidewalk next to Washington Boulevard, crossing a no-man’s land of on-ramps and off-ramps to get to Columbia Pike. I didn’t see a single other cyclist on this route. How do folks normally commute from that area?
I know others will give much better directions, but I have always found that sticking to the Loop as much as possible rather than following the crow works best in Arlington. I may have done MVT to 4mile and cut up Walter Reed. I know you could have cut through the pentagon and up Columbia, but Columbia is a mess to ride on. The loop may be longer, but between construction, lights, cars and no shoulders, it always wins as my path of least resistance.

Admit it, that was Freudian. You actually hate lights, and want to run on the WOD wearing only black at night!

Also, not to spoil the party, but I seem to remember this is a “no alcohol” venue?
No Gunther, no St. Pauli Girl, and now this. Now that I have registered are you going to tell me instead of barriers there will be rings of fire.
Oh what joy.November 4, 2013 at 8:45 pm in reply to: Capital ‘Cross Classic – local cyclocross race in Reston #985149Jason B
ParticipantYou know, I have done a couple of these this year and I would have to say, these are not fun, they are painful. They are basically time trials on rocks. I don’t know what I was thinking, but I was thought a guy named Gunther would be handing me a beer on every lap, and if I fell, a Saint Paulie girl would be helping me back on my bike. None of that happened. Heck my kids don’t even watch me because it is too cold and early. (guys like me are sent out at the crack of dawn to groom the track for the elites)
But you know what?, I was feeling a tad bit chipper today, rather sure of myself, and I thought there would be no better way to slap myself with a dose of depressing reality than to come in last place in a local cross race, so I’m in.
Dibs on last place. -
