Do not try to cross on the US 340 bridge near Harper’s Ferry.
I will take your word for it and make no such attempt, but why? Does it defy even your level of intrepidness?
Clarification for Mikey: does the ride have to be part of your commute? You mention Whites Ferry is allowed if you ride to/from. Didn’t know if that has to be a long commute home or if it can be a weekend ride.

ParticipantI just ordered my first pair of goggles, and with Amazon Prime, they should be here on Friday. Thus, you can thank me for the fact that after Friday, there should be no possibility of weather cold enough to require goggles for the remainder of the season.

I really do like what they did to this section, but I’ve run into issues with cars parked in the lane waiting to pick up Marymount students. The last time this happened I decided to ask the person to move their car as it’s in the bike lane. She pointed out that there was a sign back about 10 feet indicating that the bike lane ended. So I go back and sure enough, she’s correct. It’s clearly left over from when the bike lane actually DID end there. But now that it’s extended it would be a great idea to take down that sign and paint a cool bike lane person on the asphalt, or whatever they’re called. Any advice on where to go to propose this?
YES! See this thread:

ParticipantHey, where is everybody?
Slacking my way in on metro. Got a disabled train ahead but at least the heat is blowing on my feet.

I see Kenda also makes some carbide-studded tires; if my Nokians ever wear out, I might try those next.
I have those and they are working out very well. About a year and a half ago, I was picking up something for my folding bike at Bikes@Vienna and mentioned to Tim that I was going to be in the market for studded tires that winter. He said he’d just ordered some and to come back in in a couple of weeks. I don’t know if he’s still stocking them, but he was last year — in standard sizes, not just for folding bikes, BTW.

ParticipantThanks. You all would have me on some great vacations! Idaho’s probably not in the cards this year, but it is in the realm of possibility, now that we have family in Alberta. We might take a few weeks and do a major cross continental jaunt (but NOT during Freezing Saddles season).

I prefer the kind that hold your bike by the wheels. They are kind of a pain to dial in the first time but they are much more secure. They also do a better job dealing with step-through frames, of which my household has many (including my Dutch bike).
This is a good point — one of the moms on the C&O trip had a step through hybrid bike (yep, she rode all 184 miles on it — talk about ELITE) and we couldn’t fit it on our rack or any of the other vehicles’ racks. We had a pickup truck at our disposal for ferrying bikes both ways so it was not a problem for us, but if this is a consideration for you, keep it in mind.

Liz, what rack did you end up getting?
We got the Thule Apex (4 bike model). We bought it during one of REI’s various sales. We’ve been very happy with it.

ParticipantLooks like a big truck or trucks went through on the W&OD east of Park Street in Vienna. Don’t know how far they went, but their tires smoothed down the snow into a nice double track. Easily rideable on studded tires. At least for now.

ParticipantYour route is good. You can also go through southeast DC; it’s perfectly fine and the roads are no busier than what you are used to. However, there are more hills that way.

Late notice but I am going to be there.
Ugh! Now I am sorry to miss it. But I don’t have studded tires today and the reports out of Vienna already have me freaked out.
One day we will meet in person.

ParticipantWow, I inadvertently sandbagged this, what with November-December filled with travel, work, head injury and crappy diet (thanks for pointing that out, Tim). But I don’t actually know how much I weigh at the moment. We’ll see if I face the scale at home tonight or tomorrow. 😮

ParticipantHmm, see my midyear report below. Did accomplish the C&O Trip, totally whiffed the Total 200. Got to a new state in August, but it was too smoky from wildfires to ride much.
BUT I did learn to ride a mountain bike better and completed the shortest course of the Moco Epic with acc!
Some other things that I wasn’t expecting: a new shop ride in my neighborhood (thanks, Dirt!), riding with and getting to know more of you, learning to be a barely competent mechanic, a new mountain bike with cool stickers on it and riding 1614 miles on the first 79 days of the year. Oh and I RAN three whole miles in a Turkey Trot.
Thanks all, learned a ton from you this year again.

Hey, I didn’t make any mileage goals! Brilliant. So, um, I’m exactly where I wanted to me on that front.
For 2013, I’ve signed up for the Total 200 — not sure if it will be 200 miles or 200 kilometers; we’ll see how the training goes. I am also leading the scouts on the C&O Canal towpath from Cumberland to DC
Still on track to accomplish both by the middle of July.
I might be getting to two new states I have never been to next year, and if that happens, they are both excellent places to ride, I am told.
Well, I’ll be getting to one new state in August — and WILL be riding.
Other than that, I’ll put the perennial “learn how to mountain bike better” on the list again,
Um, *crickets* . . .
and continued domination of Strava segments where no woman has gone before me.
Yep, I am pretty much the QOM of every segment where I’m the only woman who’s ridden it.

ParticipantMy morning commute was extremely quiet — not only the day after Christmas, but I was on the late shift as well. Too much merriment last night.
It lulled me into complacency so I almost didn’t react fast enough when the MPD police car with lettering proclaiming “2nd District Officer of the Year” abruptly pulled into my path from the curb on M Street.
