Really, though, this new commute is rideable. May need to work up to it, start with a few times a week. Ultimately, if cycling is important, you will keep doing it. If not, you will do things that are more important.
I’m going to definitely try a few of these things. The route is a little complicated by the fact I can’t cross the river at the Beltway, so I’m going to have to go over the Chain Bridge. I also don’t know if there’s shower facilities at the new place, but it is a little more casual than a lot of offices, so if I’m a little ripe, it’s probably fine.

Just a tip that when you are Metroing through Rosslyn and north on the west arm of the Red Line, you can shortcut at the Farragut Crossing, changing trains by walking from Farragut West to Farragut North (or vice versa in reverse). My experience is that between 25-50% of the time you can catch the one-earlier train than you would by switching at Metro Center.
But you can’t bring bikes on the Metro during rush, correct? Or has that changed?

ParticipantI don’t know the area well, but there may be some lunch riders there already. We’ll have to see how things fall out.

They are going to detour folks onto Washington Blvd? Really? Oh that is going to upset the drivers to no end. And may then cause more than a few poor interactions between cars and bicycles. And not a fun hill up Harrison either. You will all get to experience the poor road quality, although at least they sort of fixed the mine field at 11th Rd. I am likely to try 16th and go passed the hospital to catch the trail off Glebe – not sure about crossing Glebe, though. I might sidewalk the 1.5 blocks between 16th and the trail entrance.
Note to all: Washington Blvd is packed with cars from 7:30am until close to 9am east bound, but not as many west bound. Left turns on or off are near impossible – and kindness to pedestrians/cyclists was rarely seen nor even to cars waiting and waiting and waiting to turn onto or off the road (or crossing it, as I do now on bike). Evenings it is a little less crowded, but with more cars west bound than east bound. Everyone races at the George Mason intersection where two lanes turn to one at between Glebe and Buchanan where it does the same thing. Turning left on to Glebe (east bound route) will not be pretty since (1) I doubt bikes can make the signal know someone is there to have a left and (2) without the left arrow, it will be tough to turn.
(Prior to accepting my reasons for not bike commuting as excuses, I drove Washington Blvd to work every day)I did it this morning, and no problems. I actually took Washington all the way down to Kirkwood.

ParticipantOh, but the repaved parts are so, so smooth!

e-Bikes are probably the upper limit of motorized vehicle that I want to see on the trail. There are folks who have legit needs for one (pregnancy, medical condition, etc.) and I think it’s a good compromise.
As long as they’re not using Strava for KOM points.

ParticipantThe crew was out there this morning at 8 getting ready to cut it up. Arlington County is on it.

that happened right in front of me!!! Man it made me cringe… Glad you’re okay!!!
I hope my yell was a manly bellow instead of what I’m pretty sure was a girlish scream.

Ouch! That’s not good. Which water station did it occur at? There were some odd grooves at both stations (Crystal Drive and at the Air Force Memorial) generally involving transitions between concrete/stone and asphalt. I almost got caught by the one at the Air Force Memorial.
I hope your teeth are okay.
Yeah, it was at the Air Force Memorial station. I’m more pissed that my time would have been much better, but when I fell, I completely cramped up, and had to work that out before I finished up.

ParticipantI was doing great, then on the 6th lap by the water station, I caught a groove in the pavement and went down. Luckily a dentist was nearby and checked my teeth. Barely managed 6 laps.

Any word on the W&OD between Ballston and Shirlington. I need to make a commuting decision.
Also I apologize if I am posting this multiple times. I am learning how to use the forum.
As of this morning, everything east of the Custis wasn’t touched.

ParticipantFell once walking on the sidewalk in front of my building, but the Custis is mostly clear. Depending on if the brine it, it may be messy this evening.
